Warn 8274 brake problems

Post by brad 93hilux »

Well I bought the winch as a rebuilt item off a guy off eBay, and never got a chance to load it up and test.
I got the truck on the car trailer and pulled out rope and back hooked it to front of trailer to pull front suspension down a bit, and it winches in fine but does not hold the load when you let go of button it ratchets back out..

Should have hooked it to a tree last weekend to test but didn't now I need to try to fix this afternoon if possible (Toperi tomorrow..

Any ideas?

Cheers brad

Put a g clamp on the brake itself and don't loose any of the bearings!

You should have 2 brake pads in there, maybe one if the others fallen to bits

Thanks for that, called him but there is no obvious things wrong with it, so I put it all back together..
Man them ball bearings are a PITA :bad-words: when winch is still on truck..

Going to find (or try to) assembily drawings and might pull it back apart again..

So still no sure what's happening..

Yea it's fucked if you loose one of those bearings!

But hopefully you get it sorted!

Worse thing was doing it on the car trailer which is a high one and pulling it apart over gravel.. So drop one (and I did quite a few) its looking for a needle in a haystack..

Got some drawings now so might pull it apart again when we get to the event.

Thanks for the help.

Inside the top housing you will find a cam that activates the brake , check to see if that is not binding and is free on its shaft .

Yer thanks for that, when I get up there today I will pull it apart and check it out. The disc and pad side is all put together right so that seems like it would be the only cause

Id be checking the cam gear like mentioned above
Before you pull it apart a quick check you can do is to try and rotate the outer brake disk by hand while holding the inner still. If the cam gear is free and working properly the outer disk should rotate and pull the two disks together applying pressure to the brake pads

You are on the ball!!! I pulled it apart before comp on thurs, and re assembled it to find nothing wrong.

I didnt wire it up and have never used a highmount.

Turns out my sparky mate made a mistake and the winch was running backwards, when we got to Toperi we pulled off rope because it was spooled the wrong way (this was just before I was going to pull it apart again).. And presto, winch is working

I thought brake worked both directions but after having dis-assembling it I can see it can only work one way (how it is designed)

Embarrasing but I did not know and will not forget.

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated
