gq thought?

Post by crustydemons666 »

Hi,
I am currently using a 1990 GQ with a TB42(carbi) auto with a 2inch lift and 33" BFG/ATs and I some questions I would like answers or some info on my problems/ideas
I am a 4x4 petrol/auto fan so please don't tell me to convert to manual or diesel(thanks)
biggest issue I have is money, all these questions/problems I have. I have to fix for less than 5k...
Problem one, the auto in my nissan is annoying.. The rev range/random shifting underload is quite annoying.
- I know there is a few mods that can be done to the box to help this, lockup switch, stage #1 shift kit and so on. Is this worth doing? As I don't want to do all the mods to my box and still be unhappy with it.
- or can you put an auto from another manufacture to solve the problem?
Problem 2, is the thirsty TB42 engine which seems pretty gutless for the fuel it uses. So do I do a conversion that would probably fix both problems? And which conversion?(doing 80% of the work myself with bolt on kits.) all conversion consider with or without my auto behind it.
-350 chev, 1UZ, barra 6cyl, holden 5l or 5.7l, vh45 or turbo my factory motor?
- or do I try and work my TB42 e.g.. New carbi and cam?

I want a good touring 4x4, I wont be doing any extreme offroading but I will probably do more than your average city foke I will be towing atleast a ton down the hwy on a day to day basis. Cost of fuel is not a problem providing I get the benefits out of it.
Thankyou!

I would sell it and put the extra money towards a more touring suited 4wd like a pajero or prado. You can get some nice pajero's in petrol and auto that are great for the job you are after.

Some examples

These are some quick looks, you can look harder and find some lower kms examples as well.

Wont happen for 5k, if you mod the tb42 it will still use a heap of fuel, changing of car would be the easiest for 5k

i dont mind the fuel usage if i get more out of it. id prefer the power over fuel economy but what i have at the moment is neither.

The power you get from the tb42 the more fuel it uses. It is a slug of a motor and you would be better looking at a fuel injected and slightly more modern motor.

If you like big 4wd with live axle front and rear get a 80 series landcrusier with a 4.5ltr twin cam petrol motor, uses the same amount of fuel of a little less and alot more power as a added bonus.

Fix whatever issues it sounds like your auto has, then stage 1 valve body fron wholesale autos.
Extractors and exhaust
then either convert to fuel injection or upgrade carb.

Or, convert it to a BBQ (LPG) and then turbo it, not sure you'd get much (if any) out of this option though.

My mate had diesel with an auto (not sure if they are the same as the petrol) and it was chewing a bucketload of fuel. This was after he spent 2k on a rebuilt. He took it to another auto place who discovered a block pipe in the auto. He had that replaced for about 400 and the fuel economy improved 10 fold. just a thought...

Look at ebay and try and find a fuel injection kit. Mates got a tb42 injected and gets better fuel economy then my diesel and it goes hard. Only 265 tyres and what not.

Put it on gas.

Get the auto checked out. If it doesn't downshift properly it will just lug in a higher gear and give the illusion of no power. In the mean time shift it manually.

If doing a lot of towing check out diff gear options. Other models might have shorter gears that will give you a boost in torque and economy and compensate for the bigger tyres. Fail that there are after market gear options. (not cheap though)
