Proberly a stupid question but had a search all over here and google and couldn't find the right info
I have a 93 hilux with a 2,8 diesel and a turbo. I recently fitted a after market water temp gauge as my original gauge was faulty and when towing my quad I pulled up and heard the radiator bubbling so it got hot.
But I m just curious what running temps are people getting turbo and non turbo. It's not a fuel issue causing it to heat the block its a water cooling issue.
I haven't taken it for a drive yet as I don't know what the temp should be at and I don want to cook it again

I have a working factory gauge and a aftermarket one between top hose and thermostat housing.
Around town it runs at 80-90 degrees (82 degree thermostat) on the highway no hills between 90-110 and big long rolling hills up to 120 degrees (2/3 on factory gauge) which is where I back off and 125degrees is the limit I don't go past (3/4 on factory gauge). -it sky rockets to red after this point
I have been keeping temps like this for the last 5 years with no head problems as long as it stays below 125 (ideally 120 below), over that its about its boiling point and is too hot. But I do run on the slightly more stronger coolant mix.

i have temp gauge with sender in before the thermostat where the aircon sender normally goes.
thermostat is 88c highflow. temps 88c at cruise, 91c on hills. thats all she does.
i had 82c before and it never budged off 82c.
factory thermostat i didn't really test but it runs a lot hotter. i think they start to open at 88c. probably running in the mid 90's.

Mine is similar to the above. 2.8 with CT-20 turbo fitted, working factory temp guage and an after market fitted in the top hose.
Mine sits around 80 most of the time. On the highway it gets to around 90 maybe a bit higher on a hill. The highest mine gets is 100 if sitting idling too long on a hot day.

cheers guys. i will have to take it for a strap when i get the clutch issue sorted(check other thread) if i remember correctly it was running at around 105 -110 but that was only driving it 3-4 ks. and at ode;l it ws around 80-90. thermostat isnt in the picture because i cut the Guts out of that ages ago.

That's fairly high for how much you have driven but its not going to hurt anything at that temp.

yer it started getting hot was only going to drive a short distance. when there cooled down and then drove home(was a 4wd even that i was involved with)
the confusing bit is the rad seems fairly clean(no mud) and the viscous fan has just had new oil put in it so its working propperly, and running coolant and the water pump and rad are only 12 -18 months old when the engine was rebuilt

with these style thermostat you must run a thermostat. lack of a thermostat can actually cause it to over heat. better to put a highflow one in. they make an 88c or an 82c. i would only recommend the 82 if running really high egt's ie lots of fuel and can heat up faster than the thermostat can open.
otherwise more often than not its just a case of blocked up radiators. you have to cut the tanks off to be able to clean the core out. just flushing it doesn't do much.

i cut ity out and i like it to run as cool as possiable and not have to worry about it failing. the radiator was cleaned a few months back as well but i might pulkl it out and give it a good hose out and see what happens while i wait for my clutch parts to arrive.
its not a fuel issue as i stated in the OP as it doesnt soot and rarely get EGTs over 500*c post turbo. and i watch my pyro as i am a diesel fitted by trade.

if you have removed the thermostat then thats your problem. they are a bypass thermostat. when thermostat open it also closes the bypass.
without a thermostat the bypass stays open and most of the water just bypasses the radiator and never gets cooled.

might pull the radiato out and hose it out and see i what its worth to get cleaned proply and hopefully thatt fix the issue
does any1 know if the later model fan off the 3.0Td makes much of a difference.(10 blades compared to the 7 blades on the 2.8)

hi, i have a kzn185 surf with the 1kzte engine in it. have upgraded the cooling system with a larger than stock (HD prado) radiator, new fan hub (have you checked yours is working ok?) and a 10 blade kzn165 hilux fan. the 10 blade fan move a shite load more air than the stock one did.
i've also gutted and modified the standard bypass thermostat so that the silly bypass set-up in the block is blocked at all times and have installed a hi flow 82 degree thermostat in the top radiator hose. all coolant once the thermostat opens flows through the radiator.
so far all test where it get hot before have passed. i can now push it through soft sand on the beach with-out worry. i still havnt installed the aftermarket temp guage i have, so cannot give an actual reading of my coolant temps. but the stock one doesnt move from just below 1/2 now.

Well took it for a proper run. Cruising at 100Kph at 2950rpm with no aircon it sits around 105ish and with the aircon on its about 110*c . When I apply load(foot to the floor) from 100kph it starts creeping up by EGTs get hot so I back off but cruising around town with traffic and stop start its about 97*c and aircon on its about102*c.
Will pull out tad and give it another good hose and install a thermostat and go from there

went and bought a thermostat today just the normal 88*c one.
pull it apart to find out i had already had a thermostat put in when i installed the reco engine.
couldnt install the new thermostat because it didnt come with a gasket and the oring supplied was wrong.

don't muck with the standard one. they START to open at 88c, so normal running will be in the high 90, low 100's. with the turbo and the extra fuel the engine can heat up faster than the thermostat can open to handle the heat, so its very easy for you to overheat. thats why they will go to an 82c so its slightly open at 88c.

Well all sorted . Playing in the mud for a few hours with it fairly thick and DRVING fairly hard don't go her 95 (aircon off).
Then when driving home started getting hot when on the loud pedal. So must of just been heat soak and te mud holding in all the heat. Still only went to 115* tho as far as I n aware it's fixed
