Would you mount a winch?

I'm building the nav up as a tourer, would you think a winch a worthwhile exercise?

I know I'm asking others to predict my future but these 12,000 pound winches for 600 seem too good to be true.

Or should I get one, mount it in a cradle for taking away when I need it?

Comments appreciated.

If you are going to mount one in a cradle and have it portable, just get a tirfor. Lighter, cheaper and probably easier to pack.

The cheapo winches are awesome so long as you stick to the 30sec of winching, 1 min rest and dont load them to stall.

Another vote for the Tirfor, much better winching ability, can be used from all angles and pretty easy to pack in the car except the cable roll, but a bit of thought will overcome that.

I have a warn 12,000lbs I am considering transplanting to the new car but the price of a new tigerz is clouding my decision.

My 2 cents but I wouldn't go a 12,000lbs again. At the time I was thinking my rig and trailer will be over 12,000lbs better get the 12,000lbs in reality the only times I have needed to winch is out playing with mates unloaded and if you where bogged with a load on you could always use a block.

12,000lbs just means slower line pull and shorter solenoid life.

Agree the side angles of trifor would be good though.

fit a winch for sure especially if your travelling alone

they are so cheap these days and are very cheap insurance.

if you have the tow-hithc cradle mounted one, you will never use it, and then never take it, and then the one day you need it its sitting at home in the garage!

Fit the winch. You'll use it for way more than just recovery. I'd advise you to get at least 2 snatch blocks as well so you can use them to winch from most angles. Even backwards if you use your head and think it out.

like toughnut says, you'll find a myriad of uses for a winch.

Lifting crap up, hauling shit out of the bush etc. I use mine for snigging logs and collecting timber all the time

Another vote for the winch, for $600, just mount it and forget it, find somewhere in the car to permanently stow your recovery kit.
Cheap insurance, and peace of mind with 1001 uses. I've used mine at work, at home, helped random people.

You know the old saying "better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it".

Like said above I also use mine just for pulling stuff around at home like my old MQ ute that is a mobile work bench. When it dont go I snatch block off the fence post and put it back in its spot. They are used for much more then being bogged.

And unless you like being stuck for a long while an electric winch is easy espeacially if your packed up and its pissing down rain and you fave to find your trifor under all your shit and then stand in the mud fart arsing around then $600 dont seem that bad now.

i'd fit the winch. i've got a 12000lb $300 special in my ute - given two of the best pulls i've been involved with. one of those i'd broken my tirfor before going for the electric.

ive used a tirfor.
it was getting another blokes car unstuck.
and holy fark, you realy earn your keep on that one, make sure your mates are around and share the work, damn hard!!
had the shear pin break, and noo spare, soo in a bit of bother.

I believe alot of people use the tigerz solenoids in place of other brands as they are more reliable????

Yes I use a Tigerz on a 6Hp hi mount, hasn't let me down yet.

I had an older Model Tigerz 11 Titan Solenoid and it blew
I have since replaced it with the updated model Titan solenoid as a temporary fix as it was all i could get on a Saturday morning on the way to head wheeling
I had the solenoid mounted under the bonnet just for reference and it was not corroded the solenoid blew

When I was at there old warehouse in Kilsyth I mistakenly walked into the back corner of their warehouse and stumbled across the piles of broken winch parts There was shelves of broken winches...
Even the display models had parts pulled off them motors gearboxes you name it it was missing off the display models this shocked me by the amount of broken parts Lying around the warehouse and I won't be buying one of their winches.

One of the Friends we head out with got his Hilux stuck and needed to use a hand winch as he went first and I couldn't do a Slingshot winch...
He proudly pulled out his brand new tigerz hand winch straight out of the box and it didn't work you couldn't push the lever back to put the cable through so we grabbed the one out of the back of my car and used that and he took it back I believe.

This was just my experience of tigerz other peoples experiences may differ
