hey guys, im just going over ways to get more useable power out of the lux..
turbocharging has been done to death, not that its bad but it has a lot of fiddling around involved and kits can get quite expensive..
so why not supercharge it? simple consept, belt spins, sucks air in from idle to high revs, and pushes it into the intake.. i think thats virtually it?
so anyway i have done a bit of research, sc14 or sc12 seems the most thought of supercharger for a lux..but has anyone actually mounted one to the 2l or 3l engines?
how did you go with bracketry? i assume its not too hard to make brakets and mounts...
i was going to run a 3.8ltr commy motor, but after looking at some comp regs ect. to run in the lesser classes it needs to maintain stock engine ecept for turbo or supperchares added to deisels..
so is supercharged the way? keen to hear from others!!!

Well here are some benefits I can see..
Well obviously I want more power throughout the whole power curve but.
1. Will fit virtually any engine, the sc14 can spin either way yet still make boost, so if ever I did an engine swap it would more than likely suit it aswell..
2. It can be switched on and off from the cab as the utalise a magnetic clutch, meaning I could only run it when needed, or only at wot ect.
3. I can source a complete charger for $170.
4. In my mind they seem simpler to install then a turbo.
5. They are always making boost provided there is rpm. Unlike a turbo which can lag.
6. It should make equivalent power to a turbo I would presume? I know they can drain power due to the fact they are belt driven but diesels don't lack low end poer to start with.
7. The idea of a supercharged lux impresses me as its not too main stream haha
Downsides are..
1. I can't find much lx specific info on the net.
2. I have to make brackets to suit as it needs to be held in place well enough to handle the loads from the engine belt ect.

Hats off for trying something differant.
Turbos on hilux's can be done cheap using the turbo setup off a 2.4L surf ect from wrecker or ebay. As well as buying the supercharger you will need plenty of other bits to make it fit as well as working out how to run pulley/belts.
One issue you will have with your on off system if that you need to add extra fuel when you add boost and as the hilux pumps are mechanical you may have issues doing it.
You said you wanted a supercharger as it will pull right through the rev range but also state that the diesel don't lack low down torque. the small turbos that go on these engines don't really have any noticeable lag anyway - I mean the engines redline at 4.5K and I really only drive mine up to just over 3K

bud if its for comp work only put the supercharger where the aircon compressor goes and use that belt or 1 to rrun in its place.
the fuel issue is easly overcome as you get a Aneriod(boost Compensator ) fitted to the pump and you get it setup to activate when the charger creats max boost(a good diesel tuner can set it up for you)
very easy concept mate only issue will be the oiling side of the supercharger which shouldnt be a issue as the drain will be right below in the alternator and the oio feed is just below the exhaust manifold(back of the block near the oil filter housing)
piping wont be any harder then a turbo kit. hats off to you man try it.

there is a few around that have done it.
great for off the line power. eats turbo setups for breakfast in the low gears and at take off. makes the engine seam like its a bigger atmo engine.
downside is making the brackets to hold exactly in place and belts and the biggest is that they chew V belts like crazy.
boost compensator is required of your going to turn it on/off.
really do need intercooler as they do heat the hell out of the air.

Yea look I think I will try it, I'm gathering some info, and then I will start collecting bits and pieces lol

need exhaust. new header, probably need something to clear the supercharger. won't need much tuning wise just something that flows well. also bigger exhaust. supercharged engines like big open exhausts.
intercooler highly recommended.

Yea New exaust really isn't a problem, but to all chargers need an oil feed? I thought I read that the Eaton chargers have their own oil.. or am I being silly haha

no not all superchargers require oil feed. toyota's are separate (you refill it every so often), no idea on eatons.
