cost of high powered td42
cost of high powered td42
hi all,
i did a search and couldn't find any 'matching topic'.
also i dont want to start a bitch fighting session, so here's my problem:
i have a td42 - just cooked the head, and its always burnt oil (since i've owned it). so it would need a rebuild before i put money into the head, to do things properly. i've always said if i needed to rebuild it, i'd turbo it and like to have 250 - 300hp out of the big girl.
i'm wanting to get some rough ideas on what this might cost, and who you would recommend for the job if you've had any experinces. i know would be costly, so also considering a petrol v8 transplant. any one with a rough cost on this option would be appreciated also.
i won't be doing anything about it in the immediate future as i'll either on holidays or working in the back end of nowhere for the next 4-5weeks. but i'm hoping to get a bit of an idea for something i can work towards so i can continue "living the dream".

Re: cost of high powered td42
Re a V8 transplant using a basic Commo LS 5.7 and Marks adaptors set up, a guy on Patrol4x4.com recently did a build thread doing it all himself and the cost came to $10,500 approx.
Another I know used a later model 6.0L chev, lots of new bits (radiator, gearbox rebuild etc) and the cost was closer to $25k, but that included diff rebuilds too I believe.
To rebuild a 4.2......hmmm. $5k-$10k dep on who did it and what was wrong.
There was some talk of Nissan having a stock of 4.2 bare long motors and selling them off at $6k, but i never saw any actual proof of it. Anyone?
As far as power ups..... JPC in Melbourne do a 190kw 'kit'.... turbo, pump with 12mm plunger, big front mount IC, injectors, tuning and set up, all for around $10k
If your in Qld, talk to Swafftec, they seem to be a leader in power ups.
How deep if your wallet?

Seems they don't have a web page. Talk to Shaun his daily/ tow rig is running the best part of 300rwhp.
Re: cost of high powered td42
All good advice here, and dont forget engineering costs if you do an engine swap.
It all depends how handy you are on the tools and how much power you want, cost starts going up exponentially once you start getting to the more powerful end of the spectrum. To start with you're looking at about $5000 just for the fuel pump and turbo.

My mate receintly spent money on his td42ti.
Air to water cooler
Intake manifold
injector pump (unsure of plunger size)
new garrett turbo
4" Stainless exhaust
He didn't get alot of change from twelve grand.

Re: cost of high powered td42
Hello, Just a quick question what turbo would you run to get 250 to 350hp out of your TD42 and what would you have to do to your internals????if anything cheers
Re: cost of high powered td42
20G TD05 from UFI, Swaffy pump, BIG intercooler, modified inlet manifold, big clutch. 4 inch snorkel, airbox mods. ported head.
depending how long you want it to last ceramic coatings etc.
I dont think anyone has made 350rwhp on a TD42 yet.

Re: cost of high powered td42
So far I have spent $5k on my bottom end, stroked to 4.5ltr, custom H beam rods, custom pistons ceramic coated and allow another $3k for machining, dynamic balancing, then gaskets and bearings. I spent about a month porting and polishing my cylyder head after hrs, cost about $1.5k for CNC porting if you cant do it yourself.
Then there's turbo and pump mods, $3k for pump mods and $1.5 to 2k for comp spec turbo.
I am still putting it all together so I cant give you the total cost yet, but if you couldn't do all the labour yourself allow another $10K.

Yeah get a 2871 fitted to your GU N/A engine at 20 psi with no intercooler , fuel wound up and youll be laughin.....TURBO LS2 wrote:The Diesel Shop
For 5000K's anyway

Re: cost of high powered td42
Impressive HP.
So if im reading this right, a 4,2 worked over and spent some $ on is probab;y better than a transplant. Chev, deuramax and all that = big money
My 4.2 is OK for now, but I think I'll like to repower soon, so from my reserch, I think sticking with my 4.2 td (factory) and getting more hp out ot will be much easier.
an it doesn't need engineering

Technically, only if you cut holes through the radiator support panel to run front mount IC piping.Mr Farty Pants wrote:Impressive HP.

Not if you run a custom 4 core water cooled intercooler with front mounted heat exchanger.

Re: cost of high powered td42
also chuck in a new/reconditioned radiator, as you do not, want to cook all the hard work you've just done.
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
Re: cost of high powered td42
thanks for all the input..... as for rebuilding the td42 the costs mentioned are somewhat what i thought. though i didnt realise a v8 conversion would be that costly!!!!!
on a different note, would a rebuild, gas turbo'd tb42 be of a similar cost??? its just i have an old carby motor lying around that otherwise is becoming a tetinus shot!

A tb42 will be very thirsty
Re: cost of high powered td42
How many ks do you rekon a td24 can do before a rebuild is needed?
Mines done just under 300,000. factory 2000 model turbo
Seems OK, serviced regularly.
I want more HP as its on 35s and a bit slow. Ill be puting a 3" exaust on it soon as i'm told that helps a lot

im about to put a big pump on mine which has done 340K, i know of one pushing 200+hp at the wheels which has 380K and even has leaking injectors. there are also people who dont get 300K out of oneMr Farty Pants wrote:How many ks do you rekon a td24 can do before a rebuild is needed?

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
Re: cost of high powered td42
Should be good for atleast 500k, if serviced and driven properly, also depends on how much fuel, boost, intercooler setup, EGT's etc.

Re: cost of high powered td42
If its power your after petrol will be your answer, don't be fooled into thinking diesels are better on fuel when there pushed to produce power. And you'll make more power with the petrol.

x2, petrol can make power for cheaper, but thats about all.marty wrote:Mine makes 209.1rwkw and 690nm and still gets 12-12.5lt/100km.olgus69 wrote:If its power your after petrol will be your answer, don't be fooled into thinking diesels are better on fuel when there pushed to produce power. Diesel performance is come along long way in the last ten years. Let alone the torque that comes with it.

Re: cost of high powered td42
Nothing special
Stock unopened TD42T,400k km. Last 100k km with current setup.
UFI built 12mm pump.
56trim 2871 with .5a/r compressor cover and a .64a/r T2 exhaust housing with a fair bit of porting.
Usual 600x300 front mount with a chopped up intake manifold.
3.5" exhaust.
30.1 psi boost.
Better combos around these days.

Re: cost of high powered td42
the reason i am asking is because i have option of both, not saying i would be doing both. more likely to do the diesel first then the petrol once i've done the wagon chop. you input is an interesting read though
