To run this turbo or not?
So i have a garret housed turbo with 42/48ish a/r ratio'd housings, only thing is its only oil cooled and not internally gated. Do i run this, with a small external gate or will i be better off running a ct20? Really want some opinions to persuade me on what to decide on running. I have a spare ct20 setup ready to go. This is to be run on a rebuilt 2.8L for my lux

Re: To run this turbo or not?
You need to provide more info about the turbo.
A/R ratio is only a small part of the equation.
Garretts come in many different sizes, each series of turbo will have housings available in a range of A/R ratios. A turbo to suit a 6litre petrol engine won't suit a 2litre diesel even though A/R ratios may be the same.

Re: To run this turbo or not?
well I know it's not a 6L petrol turbo that's for sure haha. In comparison to the CT20 it looks very similar in sizing. I'm pretty sure it's from a small perkins engine also. Which was diesel. When you say A/r ratios are only a small part of the equation, what do you mean? Because I was under the impression they played a big part in spool times/what motors they would suit etc

Search for your turbo by serial number if there are any visible
Then Google your engine/turbo to see if people are using the same combo successfuly.
You are partly correct about A/R affecting when a turbo spools up, but turbo 'size' is not determined by the A/R. A/R ratios won't help if a turbo is completely mis-matched in size.

had a quick look just then.

doesn't really give me much info on what size engine it's suited for though. as i said CT20 turbo and this turbo next to each other are very close in size
