the 14 bolt rear is much stronger than the 9 but also heavier. There are a fair few things you can do with them. Plenty of after market stuff now but not as much as the 9 inch. If you're looking at a 14 bolt then also look at a jana 76 which is a Dana 60 with a 70 center.

either import a set of axles or get a set from yukon enterprises down at Euroa. the guy's name is Joe Dahmpet.
The disc brake conversion isn't that hard but what makes it hard is trying to retain axle mounted handbrake on the calipers. If you have a driveshaft hand brake then it's a LOT easier.
6 stud conversion is a little trickier. Some 14 bolts came with 6 stud in the smaller cars like the C/K 10 etc. But there's also a chance they might be semi float. All the dually hubs are 8 lug. Ask around a bit on Pirate4x4 to get more accurate answers.

Perhaps look at the Dana 70, ff and 6 stud choices. Huge brakes.
If you want to be really cool, build a jana87.
The 6 stud part is what is going to be the hassle whichever way you go. You are obviously ready to put down some coin, why not another k on 8 stud rims/beadlocks

Solid do a bolt on 6stud conversion for the 14bolt. And I'll be running a hydraulic handbrake so I got a disc brake conversion for 300-350

Jana 76's are a real option. Plus you can get 6 lug hubs to suit stock D60 on to yota/nisshit rim applications from Solidaxle for a reasonable price.

I think the 14b is so commonly used in the US cos theyre common as mud there where a junkyard 14B can be had for $150. Not so easy to find here? What are you building? The 9" axles seem to be very popular in the lightweight ultra 4 style go fast buggies.

Theyre fairly common here due to the large ammount of dual real wheel F350s in this country, most of which are junk now cos of their age an rust issues. Ive seen quite a few rusting in peoples back yards during my travels around central queensland.
I got my rear D70B (4.56 ratio, 35 spline carrier)off an old guy in rocky for $300. Its 8 stud but thats ok just means ill buy 8 stud rims if I can find/import a d60 front diff.. Ive also been looking into the possibility of getting another D70, removing the axle tubes an getting custom tubes made to suit a front steer application with reid knuckles etc.

Nope you use a d70 carrier into a d60 housing.
This is what I'm doing for my front diff.

Sorry worded that wrong. I meant to say You need a high ratio D60 housing to fit the low ratio d70 carrier into. Or am I still on the wrong track an theres no difference between the high an low ratio D60s like there is with the D70s? Been a while since I looked at any of those threads

It's all about this thickness of the CW and the flange offset. I think there is only 2 different offsets, wouldn't be hard to track down both carriers just in case

I do like the removable pinion housing of the 14b tho, makes it easy to fab up a pinion/yoke/uni guard.
It comes down to who your contacts are, chev Dana, Ford Dana, or international its all going to be hard to get replacements quick. Gone will be the days where you could 'borrow' somethings from the tow car or a car in the car park

These will be going in a V6 powered buggy, and only running 37s. so not looking for something to handle 500hp

Application people, bigger isn't necessarily better. People race the hardest courses in both 9's & 14's so it all comes down to what you can afford & is available to you & where/what application you require.

I agree with Brooks's on bigger isn't better after seeing a 14bolt in person they are just a big anchor, the only reason there considered by most Americans is cause there cheap, and the stud pattern matchs dana60s, either a 9" or patrol center with Dana outers are a better options unless you like getting hooked up a lot on rocks

You won't shave a 14 bolt that much to improve the anchor. I see no sense going a 14 bolt under 43" tyres, but that is just me I guess. I do however like Milo's 3rds.

I guess the must always be a compromise. Lose some clearance for better strength over any jap setup and still keep it more affordable than a 9"
