Best 80 series ?
So I got about 30k to spend and I want a manual, diesel 80 series.
I need to tow , a small van at about 1500 kg, and would like to set it up as a tourer, and would prefer it to have lockers.
So what 80 would you buy, and mod to suit the above task ?

Just get the cleanest, lowest klm, best HDJ80 you can find.
I think some of the earlier petrols had a lower 2500kg towing capacity versus the later ones with bigger brakes and higher towing capacity could be the same for TD's?
For a 1500kg van I wouldn't bother about airbag suspension or HD coils.
Lots of them will have been repainted on top half check it's not faded / fading or had a poor quality job done.
Being a TD Landcruiser people buy them to tow big loads so check it out thoroughly, maybe replace the big end bearings as a precaution I think they recommend doing them every 100,000ks?

I wouldn't spend 30 anything on a HDJ80! The one's on carsales above have all done between 250 and 400k and they are $31k to $40K
You can get a lot better car for 30k ie the V8TD Troopy I linked above done 160k for 29k

I was trying to find the best one (considering he has 30k to spend) so I was high to low. ^^^ That is far better value, even though it's older it doesn't have anymore klms than later ones they are asking $30k to $40KTheBigBoy wrote:I think all those prices are a bit steep. just because he has 30, doesnt mean you need to spend 30. They are old 4x4 "still arguably the best though". But its good to have spare $$ to repair and upgrade with a new unformiliar 4x4.

?? Why is an 80 any better than 100? I know which one I would go for, the newest I could get for my money. Doesnt matter if it is IFS either, a diff lock can override the limitatio, of independent suspension & IFS is far better on road where the vehicle will spend most of its time.

Its more an arguement about N/A diesel vs factory Turbo diesel. Nomatter what model. Ps. Id have to dissagree with you about ifs being far better on road. In factory form, nothing it in between them. Yet the live axle front is WAY stronger and better offroad. Which is another reason for the 80 love afair (live axle, factory turbo diesel). Win Win

IFS is much nicer on road. Live axle is a lot stiffer and gives less 'feel'. In the IFS you can really push it around corners and it doesn't understeer like the live axle's do.
I was saying he should buy a petrol auto 105 (solid axle). Or spend 35k and get a HDJ100. But if he only wants an 80 diesel I guess he'll buy an 80 diesel.

Well at the moment I've got a locked and loaded ln106 lux, but I want to get away from the cart springs and get a coil wagon. Now I give the Lux hell and it's tough enough to handle the abuse 10 % of the time. Getting older and softer, but still want to play, but have to tow a van too sometimes. The 80 should come close enough to handle some abuse, and I got to buy and build for under 30k.
Any other options out there that can handle a flogging, and don't look like a turd on a stick, i'm all ears.

4.5's are natorious for large fuel bill. Ive had a few. The 105 4.5 has coil packs, so water isnt of much concern. But it still drinks like MF .
Each to their own. The roll axis in the rear is higher, which creates the slight understeer when cornering. This was set up like that from toyota. I stand by no difference in standard form between the 2.

Buy a cheap 80 series petrol, convert to 1hd-fte. That's 30g better spend. I would go auto though over the manual. Not as a general preference, but because landcruiser manuals are crap. So 1hd-fte and 5 speed from 100 series.
Alternatively, If you want to be a pioneer, drop in a 15bt-fte and 6 speed manual from a dyna/coaster. It's a combo that works really well.

Not to mention with a live axle, when one wheel hots a bump it upsets the opposite wheel. There is also so much un-sprung weight with a live axle which also affects handling.
If you want a live axle diesel there are options in the 100. I guess I am harping on the 100 because it is a much nicer vehicle to the 80 and has more room for touring. You will be less likely to get one that has been flogged within an inch of its life.
My brother in law has an ex ranger 100, one of our mates has an ex police 80. Both the same spec, absolute povo packs but the 100 is so much better to be in.
We are actually rebuilding the swivel hubs on the 80 ATM & everything is flogged, we have to speedy sleeve the axles, the CV's are worn, the wheel bearing stubs are worn on the sealing surfaces and the swivel hubs are worn. It has about 330,000 on it so it is not that old. While mot of it is still just serviceable, these are the sorts of things that you will be up against with them.
If you can find a low K 100, say between 100 & 200k mileage, you will be sweet.
Yep, factory turbo is better but bunging one one a 1HZ is not that bad either.

I know that one is a petrol but you get the picture.
The other thing, maybe look at a petrol. Quite often they are 5-10g cheaper than a diesel, especially a factory diesel. That is a lot of petrol you can pour down its throat & if you do the comparison calculations on fuel consumption they some times work out cheaper.

I would suggest he reconsider the manual. I'm a manual man through an through but wish my 4by was an auto. Plus he will have 10k spare to do a really good service and buy a few goodies.

114kw @ 3200rpm and 382nm @ 1800 rpm for the 15b-fte,..... Um may as well use the 1hd-fte as itwould shit all over it for the hassel inolved.
May just as well get a 105 and strap on a turbo, much more simple.

I'd definitely consider an auto if I were u. Love my manuals, but would rather a auto 4wd any day of the week !

I've spent over 20k to get mine 1fz to that point minus lockers. Swap? Good excuse for a road trip. Wish I had 20k.

My 60 owes me 25k including buying it so don't feel too bad!
