60 series cruiser gearbox and holden 5l into an 83 hilux

Post by lenny1984 »

hi i picked up a rolled 60 series cruiser with a nice little 5l was wondering what would be involved in fitting the gearbox into my 83 hilux as a 5 speed would be nice and i found out the hard way the bell-housing don't fit the 4 speed so the 18r went back in dont have the 2 side by side for a comparison i am a mechanic by trade can do all work my self but was wondering if it was an achievable conversion my truck already has a 4 inch lift 2 inch cab and tray lift on 33s and is regoed in qld

In simple terms - engine, can be done with an adaptor to the Hilux box, 60 Series gearbox wouldn't be feasible without huge mods to the chassis, body etc. The 'cruiser box is huge compared to a Hilux box. Also the rear output on the cruiser is offset where the Hilux drive is central out the back of the transfer case.

Go the 60 all day! Better car allround! Can you chop the 60 into a ute?

Edit: check the 60 isn't written off first
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
