Hi Gents,
I am thinking about buying an 80 series for my missus but yesterday I was talking to a guy from a 4wd repair shop on here on the sunny coast who said that 80 series brakes are shite. Can anyone shine any light on this? The guy has been around for a long time and seems to know his stuff.

I think that they're just as good as any other large 4x4 out there. My father's 80 locks up the brakes easily and the BIL's 80 on 35's locks them up just fine. I have 80 series axles under the 70x and they're ok, but take a bit of effort to lock up due to retaining the 70x bias valve. However i've still managed to pull a skid and they're the smaller 15" brakes from early 80's
As for maintenance they're piss easy and don't seem to use pads any more than any others. If you really want an upgrade though, go get a set of slotted rotors.

Bull sh$t... They can lock up 35 muds easily enough. The problem is the condition of the brakes, namely fluid and brake piston condition. I also make SS pistons to fix that.

Just put the 100 series pads it my 80, locks up with 35's now

earlier model 80 series had stock brakes, later model got the factory upgrade, whether thats larger rotors, pads possibly going from 15' to 16' rims requirement.
year might be 95? as the towing was upgraded as well from 2500 to 3500kg. so brakes would have needed to be done..

Wheel size and brake change was from 93.

All depends on condition of your brakes, my 80 is now 20 years old and brakes could do with an overhaul. x2 I had an early 80 with small brakes, you definitely felt the difference with 35's on it. Brakes were more or less un-touched apart from pad changes etc. There is definitely room for improvement.
My 105 series stops much better than the 80 ever did.
Ray, I didnt think landcruisers had handbrakes! just park the fugger in 1st, turn the wheel into the kerb on steep slopes

Its more due to brake condition. I have the smaller and they lock up 35's easy.
