76 Series Rear Coil Conversion

Post by Dalluke »

Hey guys,
Been thinking about doing this for a while but from the little bit of info out there apparently i may need to remove the body to weld in perches. Wondering if there is any other ways to do this without taking the body off. Is it a silly idea to cut two holes in the rear floor for access and then reweld them up again after, I have a drawer system anyways.

Here is what I am thinking anyway, keen for peoples thoughts
- Replace rear diff with 100 Series diff (is the 76 series centre the same? I only ask as I already have an airlocked centre)
- Use all factory 100 series arms, upper and lower and panhard and factory coil towers (planning to get some bits from wreckers or buy a rear chassis cut)
- Can i use current upper shock mounts or do I need to fab new ones? From memory the 100 diff has shocks coming off rear of diff also
- Sway bar or no sway bar...
- Track width should then be the same as front and i can get rid of my wheel spacers

I know one bloke did it with a ute on Lcool, anyone else heard of it being done...

The rear track will actually be 50mm wider than the front with the 105 housing .

I've measured, planned, measured again bought a heap of stuff, measured again bought more stuff and then gone stuff it, it's too hard so built a coil Hilux instead

I have thought about doing it as well. You can use the same center (I have a factory locker so still working on that) as for width the 09 and later has a wider rear. Did you measure the 100 rear vs the 76 front - or rear vs rear? One thing to watch out for would be the rol stability with reduce spring width. May need a rear sway bar .

Bru

I got hold of a 105 series rear chassis cut (minus centre and axles), not sure of what year, thinking it should be a reasonably straight forward conversion . Measured from wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface on the 105 series and the front of my 09 76 series and found the 105 series 50mm wider . Bought a 105 series front housing measured (have not tried to instal) and it looks to be a bolt in replacement with next to no mod's .

If the track difference issue is the problem then fitting both 105 series diff's would fix that

The 105 series chassis is wider but don't recal how much by tho'

When I spoke to our motor vehicle registry techicnical advisory council about the rear end they mentioned that my GVM would need to be reduced (this now makes no sense) and my 76 sit's at 85% GVM with no gear in it. So I give up on the idea

Yep! I think it was Nov 09 when the new model came out (the first new model), has new dash and disc brakes!

Very good points!
To be honest the main thing putting me off is how cheap the 200 series is vs the 76.
Mine was 66k on road and they are 71k.
So it''s hard to get excited about doing several grands worth of work to a 76 and possibly voiding the insurance - especially where weight is concerned.
Not sure how the resale would be- what are peoples thoughts on selling a converted truck?

An 09 100 series? Sure you don't mean 99

He meant the rear of the 76 is wider after 09'

I don't think converting one would be good for resale what about a reversible coil and leaf setup?

Custom leaves?

Parabolics?

EDIT: When your talking about a car that can do this standard you guys should be all smiles.

I'm pretty sure the rear track has not had any significant change in 09, its still the same as the previous ones and they have had disc brakes since 1991ish and probably the same track width since then too.
