NW Pajero - Spare Key

Finally, I have picked up my new NW Pajero. Very impressed. Amongst other things, I want to get a spare key cut and coded, and left hidden inside the car. I already have an uncoded key wired underneath. That way, should I lose the keys in the Simpson Desert, I can at least get going again.

Does anyone know if Mr Minit or similar can supply a generic coded key, and more importantly, copy the codes onto the key, or do I have to go to the stealership and get genuine?

Key anywhere, stealership to code the computer to allow it. unless I am mistaken it can only have two keys coded to it at any given time ( that is what the dealer told me anyway )

Thanks Love_mud, I had 3 keys with the NL Pajero and the TF Magna, The thirs key was a valet key which did not operate the glovebox lock. I left that key wired up inside the car and had a spare non-coded key wired underneath. Would like to do the same for our new cars (ZJ Outlander and NW Pajero), but so far it looks as if the stealership has to supply and code the keys.

For what it is worth, I was at the Dandenong market last Tuesday morning. There was a key cutting booth there, and the guy said that he could cut a new key for the Pajero (or our new Outlander), including an immobiliser chip for $58.00. This key did not have the remote buttons built in, but otherwise would operate the car. The price included programming the key and the car. Sadly, I didn't have time to do this, but next time I go to Melbourne, I'll chase him up. He does Magnas, Commodores and a lot of other stuff with immobilisers. As yet, I haven't found out how much to program the Outlander through Mitsubishi, but it is going to be expensive.

Well, I finally did it - this time I had the time and the guy at the Dandenong market cut and programmed a spare key for me for $58.00. Great guy - very helpful. He had to read the key code with his machine, go to the car and get more codes, come back and finish programming, then cut the key and go back to the car and test it out. It took about 15 minutes or more, but works well. All this to and fro requires that the car be in the market carpark. The key has no door open/close buttons on it - you have to manually unlock the door and then cancel the alarm by turning on the ignition, but since this is a spare key only, that is no problem. It is much cheaper than Mits dealers and also a couple of locksmiths I tried.

No connections to this guy other than being a happy customer. He does other coded keys as well eg Commodores, so if you are after a spare key, he is the best I have found.
