NW Pajero - How to remove gear knobs?

Post by date »

I have had my new NW Pajero for a few weeks now. Very impressed. I now want to fit a UHF (remote head unit), brake controller (Redarc remote control unit), an Engine Watchdog and a few switches. This requires removing the floor console etc to access the lower panels under the A/C controls.

Questions:
How do I remove the knobs on the gear shift and the transfer case so that I can lift the covers under them? I cannot even get that far, so what is the rest of the job going to be like???

Where has anyone else mounted their UHF radio and brake controller?

How do you get cable access from outside into the cabin ?

I have read elsewhere about a Mits Motors harness for the electric brakes. What is this, and where do you get it? I was going to simply splice into the brake light wire and run a separate fused power supply directly from the battery.

Hey, congrats on the new NW, is it the auto your talking about?

I think its a case of pulling down the chrome trim piece and removing two screws from the steel shaft (or the might even be exposed as is???)

Just be careful with the transmission shifter as its got a really silly plastic rod thats used to get out of park....it pokes out the top

Id be keen to find out about this brake wiring your talking about.....any further details or thats what your after im guessing as well ;)

Also keen to hear about what yourve got planned for switches etc, there isnt really a whole lot of space set aside for any addition switches is there :( Perhaps that tray section in front of the center console would fit a rack of carling switches???

As for getting cable into cabin, if you pop out the glovebox, you should be able to find the engine bay loom passing thru the firewall in a really solid grommet, if you unbolt it from engine bay, undo some electrical tape, you should be able to add into it???

Thanks Dan: Mine is a manual GLX-R. As yet, I haven't been able to find any way into the trims on the car. There seems to be no screws, so I guess that you have to prise out the panels. I have felt under the gear knob and cannot find any pins etc to release the knob. Maybe I have to lift up the panel fascia and uncouple the shafts from lower down - there is another rubber grommet on top of the tranmission tunnel about 2" below the one you can see. As for the transfer case lever, I have no idea - maybe the lever is in 2 pieces - lift the top cover and separate them???

When (if) I find out, I'll post the answers. Meanwhile, I am absolutely rapt in this new toy. I nearly didn't buy one because I could only test drive an automatic, and frankly I was a bit disappointed, but now I have mine (manual), WOW! I had an NL Pajero before, and was quite happy with it, but because of health problems, was likely to be unable to properly maintain it in the future, so I decided that we should have something which we are not allowed to touch - at least whilst it is under warranty, hence a new Pajero. Same thing with my wife's Magna. We got an Outlander. The main reason for this was the fact that we can both step into and out of it without efffort, as compared to the Magna which we had to climb out of and lower ourselves into it. Old age is a curse, but not everyone gets the privelige to be old... The Outlander is impressive, but not as much as the Pajero.

On a manual you simply grab the gear knobs and twist anti-clockwise. Pull out the cup holders and remove the two screws and the trim with then lift up.

Pajeroclub people might have more info.

i think you'll find that the 4wd lever is actually just mounted inside the cabin and only actually is a big 'switch', not linked physically to the transfer case. Just all electronic.

Do you get to get out 4wding much around Cooma? i know the area fairly well (actually grew up in Cooma - or at least close to...) The best places i know are all private property around there, unless your up for the drive down to bendethera etc ;)

Yeah, Im keen to hear how you go with it mate, best of luck,

Thanks for yuor replies.
PPSroule: I have tried unscrewing the knob - that is the logical way, but it is firmly planted on the lever. No way does it want to even look like coming off. I have tried unscrewing it and am scared that I may break something. I was wondering if there is a nut under the gearshift pattern decal on top of the knob?

FIs9076: I think that you are correct with the transfer knob. I thing that it is just a switch and will probably come up with the cover (if and when I ever get it up). Even if this is so, I cannot see how you actually remove the switches from the cover plate should this be necessary, but maybe things become more apparent if/when I get under the plate.

I am beginning to wonder if I am destined to ever get into this thing. Being brand new, the last thing I want to do is to break something, so I am being extra careful

If i remember i'll check with emmaunuale tomorrow for you and see what i can find, i know that i dont have anything for the auto tranny, but i might for the manual.

Ive only played with the auto so go no real idea with the manual, but with most of the plastics, if you grab it in the right spot and give it a good reef, it'll just pop out, its just a case of knowing what to reef on and what not :$

Well, thanks to FIS9076, I have managed to get that far. They unscrewed, which was the way I expected, but they were so tight, I was scared lest I break something. Now to find some wiring for electric brakes & aus power to the rear of the vehicle...
