Cummins Diesel Conversion

Post by Chook91 »

Evening Outers, I am chasing some direction here after trying the search function and a solid hour on google with very minimal Co-operation.

Here is the dilemma.

My old boy is over his D22 Navara. Sure it is much cheaper to run than the FZJ105 but it is WAY smaller, and very very truck like in comparison. Great work ute, but that's it. We are also selling the Cruiser because 25L/100 on petty and 32l/100 on gas is ridiculous by anybody's standards.

Here's the thing. We like the Cruiser for it's size. It's a big car, particularly on the inside. An adult can sit in the passenger seat and I've still got space between my knees and the back of the seat when Im in the second row. Buying a turbo diesel Cruiser is out of our price range. A standard 1HZ cruiser is an option but I think ultimately we will always be chasing power. Petrol is not an option.

After speaking to his mechanic last week, the bloke mentioned to my old man about a company over is WA who does Cummins diesel conversions. Put car on train, send over, cost in the 12-14 grand range, recieve car back and quote "light up 4 desert duelers into third gear with your eyes closed".

Has anyone heard of such a company here in OZ? If such a fandangled rumour were true, then how about picking up either an 80 or 105 series with a shagged motor and or gearbox, send over, and the result being one seriously powerful yet still reasonably economical vehicle?

Or am I fishing in a bucket here?

Cheers Outers

Mate a cummins 6BT would be unreal, be prepared to toughen up the front diff. Also would need to look at things like brakes and front suspension due to the weight of the beast, also what gearbox to use. I have been dreaming about putting a cummins in my patrol for ages.

Don't believe all the good news about duramax conversions...
I know of a GU with constant issues, at least two blown rear diffs, fried Allison auto, cooked loom, overheating issues....
It seemed simple at the time.
A bit of a money pit from all accounts, a 6l chev would have been easier and simpler and left lots of coin for the extra fuel it would drink.

But back OT, if you can fit a big heavy 6bt, it would be a good thing I guess power and economy wise etc

Which would have been a cool conversion in the early 90's.

Coin from sale of Cruiser already has it's priorities. So we'll push that aside. Basically leaving coin from the Navara to play with etc.

If money wasn't much of an option then it would be duramax. However after reading of a few places over in NSW who do the drive in drive out conversion, the owners aren't getting much change out of $35k

An ls2 or ls3 would definately be wicked fun, but we are dead-set on diesel power this time. We aren't even considering the chev 6.5 swaps. AFter all the problems we keep hearing about the motors and the fact that a 6.5litre motor isn't making more than 130kw and 430nm for $20+k, they are not even close to worth it.

Like I said, just fishing for any extra info. If it seems that something like this is do-able then we will go from there. Already checked out the trading post, ebay and carsales and there are a few cheap 80 series cruisers going around.

Hmm, the mindboggles

Cheers guys

Why not a 105 cruiser with aftermarket turbo and fuel pump work?

A big heavy engine will play havoc on brakes, suspension etc

I've herd more horror stories about Brunswick diesel than good ones.

chook, have a look on Ih8mud - diesel and 24v volt tech forum

there has definitely been 6cyl cummins shoe horned into HJ80s by the yanks, but from the reading Ive done, its a major, major head fuck. Too much bulk, too much weight and from memory, the fire wall needs chopping about to fit it.

You'll never recoup the cost of any conversion on fuel savings alone IMO, there would have to be some other good reasons to even consider it.

You'd be mad, adjust your budget and buy a factory TD.

Or take the gas off and sell the setup and spend the money on a stand alone engine management system and some dyno tuning with a performance car guy not a shop that sells piigyback rubbish.

No bigger in dimensions?? Are you drunk!!!

I measured up one of our plant genset 6bt's and they're bigger in all dimensions. Not by much in some directions but the height is way different for a start.

There's a reason they're recessed into the firewall of dodge rams

Hey, In short yes the cummins 6BT is do-able, Will be a great conversion.

check us out on facebook : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Killa-Ku ... 1769825285" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We are currently doing a GU patrol cummins 6BT for R&D of adapter kits. 105 will come shortly after. We already have a plate in development to mate the 6bt to the factory Nissan auto, and the landcruiser auto.

As far as I am aware the company in WA is no longer doing them, We are based in QLD and are capable of doing the conversion for you.

Weight is an issues and will need good front coils and shocks, may want to brace the front diff if your going to abuse it.

can call me to discuss if you want, 0404811498

Have you considered the Cummins 2.8 ISF that comes in the Foton? I was thinking about one of these for a 40/80 hybrid.

This mob do conversions on 79 series in Sth Africa, might be able to help.
