worth shaving 40 series diff? YES! - build pics

Post by Baja Burley »

Putting 40s diffs under the lux and dont wanna lose too much of that awesome diff clearance from a lux,,

How much can be taken out of the bottom of a Toyota 40/60/80 Rear Diff??

15mm is what I have taken out of a 80 but it still has a few mm clearance.

15mm is 15mm you didn't have before.

That's exactly right. A shaved diff on 37" has the same clearance as a normal diff running 38.5"

I just wanted to know how much

Also can create a better surface to drag over shit when it does hit even if you dont gain heaps of clearance.

You can probably take about 20 to 25mm off a 40 diff, well worth the effort.

I cut a small hole in the bottom, so i could see how far away the crown wheel was.
Then gradually cut away and put some 6mm on top to see my clearance till i was happy.
I also cut across the front, not just the bottom..

Awesome tech dude. Cheers for that.

What sort of clearance should I be aiming for? Obviously the less the better but what the minimum?

I see you've cut and rewelded the diff cover as well.

Can this be done in a 40s and just rotate the carrier in the housing to make a high pinion? Or would that spin the wheels backwards?

Edit: I'm drunk... Of course it would

After tearing down the 40 diff tonight I can confirm the clearance between stock housing and ring is 20mm.

With the pinion pointed around 15* I picked up approx 20mm. Which I'm happy with. The inside rib/spine is to ensure the bottom surface doesn't deflect AT ALL. It's built with about 1mm clearance so it really has no room to move.

Like the rib-spine, should stop any unwanted bending

Nice! Good work. I like the spine idea. Are you going to/did you weld up the inside too?

Haven't welded the inside yet. I got a bit sick of working on it and went wheeling! I should get round to it
