17" tyres - Availability outback

Post by date »

I have recently bought a new Pajero and it has 265/65/17 tyres. It is my intention to head outback as soon as health permits. What is the situation regarding availability of 17" tyres outback. I know there are plenty of 16", but 17's are becoming more popular. Are they readily available?

FWIW, I remember seeing them in the garage in Innamincka in 2006. I was surprised at the time, because I didn't think 17s were that common.

Hopefully Ryano will see this and comment. I think he's got the right contacts to know.

Had no problem getting them at Birdsville a few years back, not cheap but got one.

They are getting pretty common with alot of 100 and 200 cruisers running 17's now

Cant comment on 17s, but surprisingly, in The Alice, 15s could not be got for love or money, and that was in 2011.

Thanks for your replies. In 2006, I was in Kakadu, when I staked a tyre - a 235/75/15 Michelin. I could not buy a Michelin in the NT. I could barely buy any 15" in Darwin. The old tyre had 84000 km on it, so I tried to replace it with any used tyre which would last as long as the other 3 tyres. Eventually, I bought a new Yokohama - the same as the unused spare I had on the back, and put both on the rear axle.

Guess which tyres wore out first? - yes - the Yoko's. The others lasted 125000 km and because I was about to do another trip, I replaced them even though they were still legal at the time. It is because of this history that I asked the question about the 17's.

Last time we had a customer with a 200 I think it was with 17s on that needed replacing, some staked and some just worn out. The boss ran around all over town, and we sent the vehicle out with the tyres that needed replacing because we couldnt find any.

Having said that, it could be the boss couldnt find a set of his preferred brand/model, or couldnt find them for a good enough price, or couldnt find a full set of six.

Secondhand you might be able to find one, but probably only if they are standard Landcruiser or possibly Patrol sizes. Just may have to look in unusual places, for example at least one of our suppliers will not sell secondhand tyres, any they get are drilled or cut as soon as they are taken off. but I reckon a few workshops around town would have an oddball 17 tyre taken off something.
The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

Yeah 17's are a lot more common. Especially in the 265/65R17, 275/65R17 and 265/70R17 sizing. A lot of the later model vehicles are coming out and have been for a lot of years on 17's so they are definately reasonably easy to get.

With the all the medium to large 4wds all running 17"rims. There should be no issue.
But even still with the transport company's these days. Alice is only a day out of Adelaide. So a 2day wait at the most.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
