power steering in 40 series failure
Hi everyone
i put a powersteering box out of a 40 series landcruiser and powered that with a hj60 series bottom mount pump, both of which were reconditioned, i found that the resivour was getting to hot to touch when the ute was only idling, and it never seemed to have a centre when driving, then about 500km on the pump it failed and pumped all the fluid out through the seals, so i am wondering if anyone has any ideas why this happend, i am only running 31 10.5 r15 duramax tyres, and its a old 2h
thanks Shane Mulcahy

Re: power steering in 40 series failure
Did you keep the original pulley on the pump or swap it for a smaller one?
My friends aren't holding me back..... I'm pulling 'em forward.
Re: power steering in 40 series failure
hi thanks for the replys and as far as i know the pulley was the same as standard, and also the hoses should have been the right way into the box cause it was working a treat apart from getting hot

I'd go and speak to them about it.Mulcahy wrote:well i got the pump and box rebuilt myself by a well known power steering shop
I would have taken it to see them when I noticed things were getting hot on initial installation.
Did it have some type of cooler? even just a pipe loop across the front to try and take some heat out of the fluid?
The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

Re: power steering in 40 series failure
i have spoke to them and as it sat awhile before being installed and run they are not warranting anything, and i was wondering if there is a releif valve in the pump or box that could have caused the problem, and no the pipe runs straight from resivour to pump and back directly, i am going to put a cooler in when i fix it up
