Not sure if this is Tech enough, or if it belongs in General Chit Chat
I have already posted a wanted ad for an engine in case anyone has one, this is more of a general enquiry for where to get one from.
Just want to know of any good places to source 2nd chev engines, and parts and accessories? or if anyone has any good contacts in the states for such things?
I'm based in wollongong, near sydney NSW, but things can always be shipped.
Any info appreciated
Cheers,
Rob

If it is engines you can get chevy parts almost anywhere... Is it a old carbi 350 of what? you have Rocket industries for standard and performance parts and engines maybe and then there is rare spares, these are bost major companies and can help. Il see what i can find for second hand parts.

Do you want to narrow it down a little.?
Which Chev engine are you after? Which parts etc.

Re: 2nd Hand Chevy parts dealers - Oz or US
Sorry guys - What I am after is a 454 Big Block running with bolt ons (i didn't want to write that specifically because i already have in my wanted ad) which i will use for the conversion, get the rest of the conversion sorted, engineered, back on the road, then rebuild the engine later on, so i have some time to research what i want to do to it.
So firstly i'm after a complete engine, or if i find one that is missing some bolt ons, just a bit of a list (apart from just eaby - my main source for stuff) of places who deal with chevy parts.

Re: 2nd Hand Chevy parts dealers - Oz or US
What car is it going into? The engine needs to be the same age or newer than the car so putting one in a 96 FJZ75 for instance isnt going to happen. There are also size limits, weight issues to look at too (notice there arent any 454's in 4x4's in AU, there is a reason....)
Re: 2nd Hand Chevy parts dealers - Oz or US
There are a few 454's around that i have found on the internet in oz 4wds.
I spoke to the RMS (NSW) tech department, and he has informed me running straight LPG i could run any year model engine, OR running petrol the engine needs to come out of a car with the same emissions ADR's as my ute - and 454's were available until 1996 from what i can find so far - so for example (which i have to research fully) if the ADR's for emissions didn't change from 1992-1998, then i can run a 1992-1998 PETROL 454 in my ute.
Or any year straight LPG.
Nice pick up on the ute model yep - it's going into my ute

Re: 2nd Hand Chevy parts dealers - Oz or US
No 454's were sold in AU between those dates so an import is going to be your best option and then you will have to get it well documented. Why do you want a 454 anyway? The size, weight, cost, rarity etc are all working against you. Finding a LS1 will save you over 10k in the conversion, be better on fuel and make more power especially if you do a head / cam at some point. The emissions on a 454 is going to be very hard to match on the conversion as well as a plumbing nightmare.
This might be an option

Still need the intake etc but its a small block 454.

Re: 2nd Hand Chevy parts dealers - Oz or US
That's well out of my budget for this conversion. I will spend around $2000 - 2500 for a running stock motor, and later on rebuild it if needed. LS1's can also be had at this price.
I had seriously though about the LS1's - but i would like to get away from the whole electrical side of it - looking in to how much is is involved turned me off it. Plus running a simple straight LPG setup (if i go that way) saves some money in some electrical conversion costs compared to an LS1 - computer interface, speedo adaptor (to electrical output) and VSS interface for example.
I like the idea of a simple ignition/fuel system, easier to diagnose problems. I know I can/will get frustrated if an LS1 conversion produces bugs and gremlins... and if i can avoid that i would prefer to.
Of course if anyone HAS run a 454 in a fourby, i would like to hear about it.

I think I would like to deal with the electrical gremlins that would come about by using an LS conversion than trying to get the carb related emission control systems that would come with a 1996 model engine any day of the week.
Are you sure the 1996 454s are still carby, and not just throttle body fuel injected?
Could always get LS registered with EFI then ditch it and throw a dirty old holley on top if you wanted.

The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

Re: 2nd Hand Chevy parts dealers - Oz or US
my uncle had a 454 in a old chev.
square shaped body, and do believe it was straight gas.
they bought soooo maaaaaaany vehicles, when i was out their. i couldnt keep up.
but the 454 and the fact that the engine bay in a chev is massive, it looked quite small
but damn it towed their speedway car like it wasnt even their it hauled ass BIG TIME, 140k easy as.
dont remember if 4x4 though
company worth talking too is dewars performance engines.
they could possibly help in locating said engine.
but with a price id say..

LS1/2.
Light and easy! Electrical is nothing to worry about. Killalux will organise you a loom for very little $. $700 from memory.
Then no gas, gas certs etc.
One day you will sell the car and a LS1 would be an easier sell,
Just my 2c
cheers bru

I have the same set up your after but in a Nissan Patrol GQ so if you need to ask any questions fire away
and if you need to poke your head around for a look see I am up the hill from you at Miranda .
I brought my crate engine from http://www.eagleautoparts.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for $6500 about 5 years ago and almost turn key with warranty and it runs on LPG with a simple gas mixer
and used marks adapters without issues .

I'm looking at an engine now - low kms, out of a 89 Chev, still carbied though, and another out of an 88' model somthing (numbers date it to 88) and it's running TBI.Hilux_Ryan wrote:I think I would like to deal with the electrical gremlins that would come about by using an LS conversion than trying to get the carb related emission control systems that would come with a 1996 model engine any day of the week.

The LS1 was the leading contender for long time, but after a mate had some lecky dramas with his inj. 5L (leaving the car stranded for 4 days), i started to think back to old school again.

LS1 would be easier sell - from what i'm seeing no one is paying what a modded car is worth, but I'd say you're right that it would sell easier.bru21 wrote:LS1/2.

lol, the 5L had elec drama's when they were still in Holdens let alone being converted to something else. The LS1 loom is very simple, tuning is done via a laptop and you will have more power and torque everywhere compared to a 5L and do it with less fuel.

I've got a few vids of stool's 502 in action and i can vouch for it being a good fit for a jap 4x4 engine bay.
You might struggle in a 40 or 70 x engine bay though for the width

I have a 98 injected 454 in my gq. a very very tight fit, drivers exhaust had to be changed to run forward and around the front of eng as it smashed the starter on flex. everything is very tight. had a marks man adaption and smashed it so currently is matted to a gu auto. feel free to ask anything. I love the 454 but I got it very cheap out of another gq so I went that way.
massive torque.....

Thanks guys. I'm going up to see Stools troll this week - throw the tape measure over it and my ute and see how big a headache it's going to be. I've seen (on the internet, where everything is true ) a few 40's and 45's with the big block, can't recall a 75 with one though.
What ratios were you running manual, and now? highway cruising/fuel consumption and low range gears?purplebus wrote:I have a 98 injected 454 in my gq. a very very tight fit, drivers exhaust had to be changed to run forward and around the front of eng as it smashed the starter on flex. everything is very tight. had a marks man adaption and smashed it so currently is matted to a gu auto. feel free to ask anything. mines not really a daily driver and hasn't had its proper dyno/fuel map ( they just threw a 350 fuel map in and modded it a bit) but with the gq man and 4.1's with 35's was around 16-17lt/100kms. if you drive it angry it will chew heaps though. was a bit revvy on the highway as well.. I have 3.9's for it in the shed. with the auto and the 4.1's it uses a little bit more but that is expected with an auto. I did a 3hr highway run with a mates td42t gu ute on 33's and the fuel cost was the same as his diesel.Stackson45 wrote:Thanks guys. I have 43% crawlers in the transfer as I do a fair bit of slow rock stuff.
when you measure it make sure you allow for exhaust as they are a very wide eng.
here is it at the local bike show. snapped the marks adaptor off the line. you can see the smoke as it melts the clutch. also snapped the locker half way through as well. these are 10yr old trailer tyres in 32s and 2nd gear. it normally smokes 35s through 2nd and 3rd no problems. haven't ever done anything like this so didn't know that soft tyres shouldve been used. lots of lessons learnt this day.

Go a ZZ383 if going straight LPG. Big block torque in a small block. Check out the torque curves of it and several big blocks on the GM performance website. Don't buy through Eagle, import your own.

Are the gen 6's 4 bolt mains? Where did you get it from?
I have an earlier 2 bolt mains 454 here that i'm going to use but if it's not too hard to find a good runner late gen i'd swap it so that supercharging is a safer option

Just off gumtree, off a bloke in central coast. From what im reading all gen vi 454 are 4 bolt mains - as they were a truck motor, and didnt come out in any cars. For supercharging 4 bolt would ease your mind at least.
