lookin at that i think you might want to get busy, and as nominations close tomorow it loooks like it will just be the nine vehicles entered so we might have to see if we can organise an extra stage for saturday afternoon.

I've perused the thread and not seen any info regarding what amenities are available during Rumble on the Rocks. Are there any food/drink vendors? Toilets? Is this info on a website?

G'day all.
Seems like nobody's taken the time to post up after the event......other than facebook. I guess I'll do what I can from my perspective.

This is the second Rumble on the Rocks (to my knowledge). I was unavailable to compete in the first one which was held over the Aus Day weekend in January this year. The 4wd TV footage from the first event, shows the crazy weather events that occurred leading up to, and the weekend of the event.

Link to that footage here - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=53 ... =2&theater" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Whilst we had some rain for this event, it was nothing like what the guys faced in the first event - something I for one was very happy about!

First off, I've got to thank Matthew Bond for offering up his entry to me after he suffered some engine damage the previous weekend and I had missed the cut off for the entries.

There were 9 entrants for the event however 'Outcast Offroad' unfortunately suffered mechanical issues early and didn't start an actual stage. There were 3 stages (including qualifying) on the Saturday, with another stage Saturday night and a long stage Sunday. The qualifying results would set the starting order for all tracks throughout the weekend. Being that the courses are all natural georges / gullies with very little room for passing and very few options on the larger obstacles, I knew I would have to qualify well to have a chance at the overall trophy. As I was the last to enter, I was the last vehicle to qualify. Knowing others times wasn't much help though as you have no idea what's ahead of you or how long the track is when you qualify. Basically I knew I had to have a clean, quick run to set me up for the weekend. Thankfully, I managed to finish the qualifying with a decent lead over the next place person which secured me pole position for the following stages.

Stage 1 was a quick run down a gully near the campsite. The course was marked for the full length and was extremely tight whilst also being very rocky with some large (1-1.5m diameter) boulders. It also involved a blast up a dirt wall with a step near the bottom and subsequent near vertical drop back into the gully. Due to the tightness of the course, I don't think anyone actually finished without taking some cone / bunting penalties. In fact, some knew straight away they would not be able to get around and elected to go straight through the bunting and take the time penalty. Just one of those calls you make on the day. I managed to get my rear sway bar hooked on a tree and broke the heim joint connecting it to the rear trailing arm. Thankfully I'd put a front sway bar on for the event so I still had reasonable handling.

Stage 2 was a run up Cal's from start to the new finish (a few hundred meters further up the gully). The run up Cal's was reasonably uneventful for us. Being a single seater, I don't have the luxury of a spotter / navi very often. I did have my spotter Greg (1madengineer) waiting for me at the end of calls though which was lucky as I wasn't able to drive the last waterfall. I did have quite a few goes trying to get up the slope to the left (first vehicle to try it) but try as I might, just couldn't make it and ended up having to winch the waterfall. After the waterfall, I thought it would be plain sailing but ended up having to winch twice more due the slickness of the rock further up. We were basically driving up what should be only moderately difficult however it was just that slippery, nothing was getting traction. Mick Sweeney who started only two minutes behind me caught up to me on the last winch. I believe I was just getting off the track as he hooked up his winch. At the end of the day, we both got exactly the same time. Fortunately there was a rule for that and it defaulted to the fastest qualifier.....us! Brett & Mitch Thorpe had a spectacular roll on this track on the waterfall that we had to winch. Brett had snapped a brake rotor and damaged the caliper earlier in the stage and lost all brake fluid (and brakes along with it). Trying to drive in that sort of terrain without brakes takes skill (and a few other things too). Unfortunately it didn't pay off for him and ended up with the rollover in the link below. Gurt Racing also had their share of mechanical difficulties on this track with a dodgy fuel system. I actually don't think they got the car back down to the campsite until the Sunday???

Brett & Mitch's roll - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=53 ... =2&theater" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Stage 3 - Saturday night. This was held on Steve's old property through an absolutely killer rock george. I could have easily spent hours playing around in there however this was a race after all. I think we did it in around 10mins. This stage involved two large drop offs that must have been vertical (or very near to it) and just over a car length long. From what I'm told (I didn't see it) the most spectacular drives came from Roger Edols and Michael Sweeney. Roger performed some of his usual aerial acrobatics to somehow end up at the bottom of the first drop in one piece and on his wheels (something he struggled with many times over the weekend!) and Mick had the rear end kick sideways as the front hit the bottom of the drop resulting in a close call with his spotter who was thankfully already hiding behind a tree. I'm told no one was injured though the spotter's jocks may have needed a wash afterwards.

Stage 4 - Sunday. Sunday's track was a full run from top to bottom of the lower creek track and easily the longest of the tracks for the weekend. It involved a number of drop offs which had become quite slippery with the rain over recent months. I'd like to know the distance but it's probably around 5kms of some of the hardest terrain you'll see. The rocks are unrelentless and the faster you go, the harder you hit em so it's a careful balance. With the slipperiness of the rocks, you'd have no chance of backing out of a drop off if you started down the wrong line. It's times like this that I wished for a navi! Speaking of navi's, I did have Mitch Thorpe stand in for me as a navi at the start of the track where the choice of lines left you with a large drop off with an equally large boulder at the bottom or a tight twisty switch back where you needed either front dig or rear steer capabilities at a minimum and not to mention eyes in the back of your head (or a spotter). Other than this initial part of the stage, I ran the stage unassisted which was a heap of fun. When you're alone in the buggy for an extended period, you end up talking to yourself (well I do anyway). You think you hear someone catching you so you hammer down then all of a sudden you tell yourself you're going to quick and will destroy the car. Then there's other times where you're just off with the fairies. I actually spent a lot of the course driving with just one hand on the wheel and basically cruising. That all changes when you run head first into a boulder though!

Ok, that's enough writing from me. Sorry if it reads as being from one perspective only but that's the only version I know! Plus it's been week and I've forgotten the times etc for the tracks.

As per the results that have been posted previously we (Team DGR) took a very convincing win with our overall elapsed time being less than half that of second place. We're lucky that our buggy is well suited to this style of event....other than the lack of winching skills and a second seat. As the overall winners and winners of each stage, we received quite a few prizes:
1st place overall cash prize was sponsored by All Metal Magic
4 stage and qualifying wins sponsored by Autobarn Slacks Creek, Nuvo Homes, On Track 4wd Center, Just Do It Towing and BCF
Great support for a very cool event.

Other thanks must go to Steve and his crew for hosting the event. Steve works damn hard to keep this park open and unfortunately the weather didn't play nice and scared off a lot of spectators. We can all do our bit to support Steve and the event by attending the park regularly. It's the park entry fees that will keep this place open.

Additional thanks to 4wd TV for their continued support for the event.

If you want to check out more footage, go onto our Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/teamdgr00" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or the City View Facebook Page. Various videos and photos are have been posted up.

Great write up mate!

Thanks heaps for taking the time to share with us your take on the event! I've seen a bit of footage of the buggy from the event and you were putting in a good pace along those boulder filled creek beds! :armsup:

Just to update DGR on the night stage.
Michael Sweeney actually ran over his Navi Rob Moore.
The trep was sitting on Robs lap for awhile then when Michael went of Rob reckons it felt like he moved the rear steer while it was still on his lap.
Luckily for Rob this time he didn't end up at the hospital like at the first round but still had some pretty good bruising.
Thinking he should stay with driving and leave the navi thing to people who have learnt not to get hurt and to stay out of the way. :armsup:
