Re: Swivel Hubs
hey silvio,
would attempt to do it yourself or are you just wanting someone to do it for you? It is a very labour intensive job hence the high labour cost. Its not a hard job, just messy and time consuming. im in WA too but sorry cant help with a price if someone does it for you
If you do want to do it yourself have a look at this kit. good value

Hi Silvio.
Ahh swivel hubs...
Is it the cause of your death wobbles? I don't know. But it's a good possibility.
I have paid to have mine done and it cost me around the $1200 mark IIRC. That was in Sydney circa 2008. So your price seems pretty reasonable.
I have also done it myself, but I can't remember what the kit cost me.
Would I pay someone to do it again? Fuck no.
It is, as mentioned, a time consuming, messy as hell job that noone really wants to do. Hence the labour cost.
I've actually done it a few times because I fucked it up as I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't set the shims right and was constantly doing inner tube seals and wheel bearings until I found the issue. I've learnt now how to do it and how to do it right therefor would be happy to spend a few afternoons doing all the work myself and save a bit of coin. It's not hard, just labour intensive. Buy a Gregorys workshop manual for and it's all in there.
The ebay kit looks alright, but personally I'd be looking at a terrain tamer kit or similar. It's certainly not a job you want to do again because you used cheap bearings or a shitty seal. Whatever way you go, FFS, change the inner axle seal (some call it shaft seal) while you're there. It wont come in the kit but if you have it all apart you'd be mad not to change it. It'll cost no more than a couple of bucks.
I don't know how good you are with a spanner so can't say whether you should do it yourself or not but if you can do without your car on the road for a few days and are keen to give it a shot I am more than happy to answer any questions.

Re: Swivel Hubs
youll have to get the locktup kit..
they are in WA..
their inner axle seals are friggin thick..
soo should get some serious kms out of them.
they are meant to be martin crawler seals ?
but locktup sell them as a package..
heavy duty swivel hub kit, with realy thick felts and same again backing plates..
awesome gear
6/7 hrs it took me and my mechanic on a 40 series..
i done one side and he done the other, he checked my work.. all fine.
about 480 or something...?
i had bought the kit.. seperate
i just put all new bearings and EVERYTHING IN. like the copper bush on the inner tube..
one inner axle seal was leaking.
could have just thrown the new seals in and be done with it.
be cheaper, but getting a few k's on the road, soo want it reliable.

I forgot about the Locktup stuff. No first hand experience but it certainly seems the business. I'd definately go with that kit if doing it again.

The terrain tamer or similar kit which comes with all the parts, including inner axle seals last time I checked is worth between $150-$200 depending what model.
Genuine book time for the job is 8.8 hours, so that is where alot of the cost goes, it is a whole day job.

The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.
