ln65 mods

Post by adamke »

gday lads, just new to the site and thought id say gday, i picked up a ln65 single cab with 33's and 2" body lift, unsure on spring height. probably 2"

car drives ok..., has power steer and air con, but now im looking at how to improve the ride quality. i know i cant expect much but im assuming if i look at a efs 2" front rear, new shocks and greaseable shackles and new bushes im guessing will help everything feel a bit nicer. ive just gotten a wheel alignment after new front wheel bearings, tierod ends and brakes. i also got the car with a dropped drag link but hasnt been fitted yet. Interested in just making the ute good to drive, not a big fan of flex and all the shit, mainly just a truck to take to the beach, tow, and take shit to the tip.

I also have the dirty ol 2.4, its still pretty tight with 265k. i just did a major service, all fluids, filters and adjust valve clearance. Running extractors and 2" exhaust.

Im thinking of runnig a turbo on this motor with a homemade steampipe manifold and a td04. this motor seems really good and doenst show any indication of burning oil also.

Any one whos had one if youve got any tips or help with ways to get this old truck to be reliable, bit more poke or has one wrecking so i can get a couple of interior parts let me know.

Cheers lads

Hi mate. Welcome.

I have a old ln65 also and i love the thing, but don't expect a good ride. My advice is fit better seats, i used later model surf seats. They offer shit loads better support and adjustments over the stock slabs.
To help also i have carpet fitted and underlay (i would now consider dynamat though) to help keep road and engine noise down.

Performance wise i added a turbo to mine and am very happy with it. Mine has alot of k's and i still did it. For 3 years it has been running great at 14psi. I have always had it intercooled in some form, the current setup is water to air. I tuned it myself and run 2 quality pyro gauges (one before and one after turbo). I have done many trips away in it, driving for hours at a time no hassles. I had to add power steering to mine but i know don't know how i drove it for so long without it.

If you do have lifter springs you really need to add an adjustable torque rod asap. If you don't you will ruin your drivers side front spring, it will look like a W. My ute didn't have one in when i bought it. I added one and replaced the springs.

Service it religiously every 5000kms at the most. I usually only go 3500 to 4500 just because i'm cautious and the turbo causes extra stresses on the motor.

They are a great old hilus these old things, look after it and enjoy.

As said above, do regular oil changes, these things hate dirty oil.
If you want to fit a turbo, maybe get a compression check done, to see what condition motor is in.
A leaf sprung hilux will never be a comfort mobile, but new bushes, decent shocks, decent seats will all go towards making it a bit better. Maybe look into the comfort springs that EFS do.

Ive got a LN65 myself, and I love it.

hey guys thanks for the responses, yeah i sold my ln167 5le and down/up graded to the old ln65. i swear by 5k oil changes, 10k fuel filters and use diesel power every tank.

as for seats it has a mod plate for the 2 seats in it, but there not overly comfortable, but i do have some silvia seats i may end up putting in. I am thinking about the dynamat BzR5150 like you mentioned! i have the vinyl floor with torn gear boots so its noisy as inside. one thing bout the ln167 was quiet inside.
The ute has a adjustable torque rod too mate, so not alot other than leafs and shocks to sort it all out.

Im in ippy to mate would be good to check out your rig and have a chat bout your turbo setup

I just picked up a ct20 and all the fruit so im organising parts to get ready to put it on and get it all underway.

Dudelux, thought about it and have followed your advice so i bought an ebay diesel compression tester and it should arrive tomorrow, ill sus out compression and make the decision on what to do.

Also anyone got tips on compression test for diesels? Take all the glow plugs out after engines warm, hold stop on fuel pump, crank 5 or so times and record each reading? can i also get a similar result as with a petrol engine with a teaspoon of oil down the hole to see if its giving any indication of rings/valvestems or is it just to detect lack of compression and equality?

cheers
