TD42 Conversion!!!
TD42 Conversion!!!
Just wondering how much work is involved in converting a 2.8td to a 4.2td in a GQ?
Would we need new gearbox, drivetrain and wiring etc?
Any help would be great Cheers

Re: TD42 Conversion!!!
gearbox (can keep transfer) and gearstick ( or auto if you wish)
clutch (master, slave, booster if you want, clutch kit)
tailshafts (can keep small 2.8 ones if you wish)
engine mount adaptor on drivers side ( i have details for this I can send later)
radiator cowl and fan
throttle cable
hand throttle cable setup
some minor mods to glow wiring
exhaust
engine TD42
alternator (early one plugs in direct to 2.8 wiring)
some mods to the vacuum system piping
engine mounts (best to use two bolt type)
some minor wiring rerouting to connect sensors
radiator / heater hoses
aircon pump / hoses
air intake to snorkel (depending on your setup)
diff ratios - or big tyres
Its easier if you have a donor car as you get the complete setup.
probably other stuff too. I have more detail in my other computer if your keen
Worth the conversion if you have a good truck

Re: TD42 Conversion!!!
Thanks for the help. We are pretty sure we are going to to the conversion, the 2.8 we just bought has only done 150 thousand k's and its in pretty good condition, but we want the 4.2 in it. We did realise that there would be a bit of work involved and we have the time to do it so we want to do it properly. We dont have the donor vehicle so we are just going to buy all parts separately. If there is any info about conversion that you could send me that would be great.

pm me your email and I will forward some info I have
Re: TD42 Conversion!!!
Hey just asking as well as I havent found any specific information about changing to a td42. Wats the best gu to convert? 4.5, 3.0 or 2.8? ive got gq with 4.2 manaul, wat other gear would I need to convert into gu?
Zilzie mav's GQ with 30 pound of swafftec turbo whizel..
Re: TD42 Conversion!!!
GU gearbox has diff selector housing on top to GQ
I would suspect a 3.0 GU (manual) would be easiest to convert as the gearbox can remain, just change bellhousing.
also air filter is useable.
Maybe someone else can confirm which is the "best' conversion vehicle, but in reality its probably going to come down to the best vehicle you can find for the $$ thats worth converting

how much of this gear can i take out of a 4.2 efi petrol wagon for a 2.8td wagon to 4.2d conversion?
i could be getting a 2.8td wagon very cheap - blown head.
i have:
- 4.2 efi petrol for the taking
- 4.2 silver top diesel - needs a rebuild. have turbo, exhaust manifold and i/cooler
- 4.2 spare gearbox abnd transfer
and porbably other bits and pieces to work - not sure

Gearbox, tailshafts, diffs/ diff flanges transfer gearsticks etc are much the same between 4.2L engines. If its auto you could use this on the diesel but you may wish to change the computer controller to suit the diesel or go aftermarket controller
You will need a diesel 4.2 bellhousing or drill & tap an extra hole in your petrol bellhousing and fit the extra stud/bolt for the diesel starter.
Things that cannot be used off the petrol are alternator, not sure if the radiator piping is different -hoses definietly are- you need to check, of course wiring, air intake system, exhaust, clutch, vacuum piping may need to be looked at, fan and viscous coupling, fan cowling, radiator/heater hoses, power steering pump,
Thats all can think of right now.
