Thinking of buying a 98 land cruiser troopy?! Any suggestions, comments, reviews, problems?!!

First trip will be up to cape York from Byron bay with many more trips to come :)

a good general rule is to stay well clear of the hire troopies.
generally the ones on frazer island.. give them a wide berth.
they mostly go to the wreckers I hope :shock: or the scrap man

plenty of them about.
as I said one on the classified on exploroz.
that one is a mega troopy not real good for serious off road, as youll get hung up everywhere, too long departure angle..
basically too much body sitting behind the rear wheel.

ideally the best bet but pretty much out of budget is the coil front end troopy model. starts around 2003 ??
good ride up front and with a well sorted suspension kit in the rear, should handle nice with a load on.

I would test drive the 80series, as these will be a superior ride.
coil all round, and one of Toyota's finest built.
the troopy is tougher, but sometimes comfort rules with a long term purchase.. :agrue:
Australia is a land of long distance driving, and as much as id love a troopy myself.
ive had a leaf spring vehicle long enough to crave a full coil vehicle.
some comfort can make a long trip not soo taxing, even onroad as well.

im done with the leafs.
next car will defiately have coils on it.
whether a combo, front coil, rear leaf or all coil.

test drive either car and youll see what I mean.
long term, coil wins for me, touring wise.

check out the classifieds on here 80series all kitted out, low kms, and well looked after.
priced pretty close to your budget.

Avoid leaf sprung vehicles for long distance touring, unless you don't need kidneys ;)

I've found a 96 cruiser 80 series with all the bits and pieces - rear bar front bar whinch tough dog 6" suspension adjustable steering and shocks..... And racing arms front and rear diff locker arb air pump diff roof racks snorkel new tyres dual program electronic ratio box GPS and a few other things?!

264000ks, 1hz engine, 5 months rego

Any questions I should ask this guy?

this one is another option, the person has dropped their price to 20,000 which is still too high.
16 should be the selling point.
this one sounds pretty well cared for though.
km in the 300k.
times are tough soo the buyer is on the winning side.
even if you paid 17 to 17,500 looks to be good buying.
turbo diesel power, economy.

as I said I helped a bloke buy an immaculate 80, 94 model with 140k under 11grand. 4.5 petrol though, the vehicle was selling for over 6mnths though.

You won't want more than 3" lift in a touring vehicle, it will drive like a boat and you will be fighting the steering wheel all day, plus more than 2" is illegal up your way.

Agreed, especially if you'll be carrying a tinny on top.

2" lift is ample. Anything more creates all sorts of issues from mechanical problems, vibrations, to poor handling, to reducedstability in the bush, to practical problems like no parking in shopping centres, getting groceries in and out of your esky, let alone puting a tinny onto the roof

In general, ask for service history. If it's diesel ask when the fuel lump and injectors were last serviced.

Have someone who knows 4x4s check all the bushes, steering, and bearings for play.

If you're looking at cruisers, check out http://www.LCOOL.org/forum for advice on all kinds of landcruisers with more of a focus on touring and technical, maintenance stuff.

you need to buy vehicle first

that is your biggest hurdle to date. :!:
sort out the car first.
build it to suit you.
your kind of getting ahead of yourself, before you've even bought a car
once then jump on and ask.

you might find you have plenty of room with just the 2 of you, roof racks baskets are a family thing. requiring more space to store stuff.
roof racks will be for the impending boat.. if you have money spare.
