replacing main bearing cap bolts

Post by biegetroopy »

im rebuilding a 1hz engine and cant find out if i have replace the main bearing cap bolts, one bloke has said i have to coz there a +90 bolt but i rang 8 places today to locate some and nobody carries them except toyota[@$14+ each] most just say never been asked for them or there not even in the cataloque even engine rebuild kits only come with head bolts which sort of indicates they dont need replacing ,any opinions would be appreciated, cheers mick

If they are angle torque bolts then they are only designed for a single use. The angular torque stretches the bolt beyond its elasticity and it cannot return to its unused length therefore they cannot be used again as they will not provide the correct clamping force the second time.

You can reuse them.

You can reuse the head bolts too, but only if they are within specification. They are not stretch/torque to yield bolts. Since most 1hz heads (or any head for that matter) come off because of overheating they are usually in a throw away condition anyway. So it's easier and not all that expensive to just replace the bolts.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
