Heres a question for you, when was the last time you gave the gearbox an oil change and what is the colour of the oil in there now?? and does the oil smell burned it you smell the dip stick, and are you pulling a trailer ?? when you say that the A/T light comes on, when you are pushing it hard up hills, also, do you take it out of overdrive when feel it straining on these hills, if not, then this too will help the box to stay a little cooler.
The only thing that may hurt, is if you give the box an oil change, when I say hurt, I mean your pocket LOL

Hi, thanks for the replies, the gearbox oil was changed 6 months ago and is still nice and red now.

No trailer but full steel bumpers all round, winch, drawers, reinforced canopy and roof tent.

By uphill I was driving through the Alps. Locking it in 2nd gear helped.

Tool it out fully loaded on flat ground this weekend and the light didn't come on but it smells hot!

How about one of these ?

It has also just started to make a slight grind when I engage reverse?

I do not know details of the original cooling system for the transmission, but have you checked that the system is working OK? It is hard to see that as originally built, the transmission would get that hot, and the driving conditions you describe is what I would classify as normal driving.

Apparently it a common problem on these and pajeros?

The normal cooling system for the transmission goes through the bottom I the rad.

In the alps we were climbing to 3000m fully loaded in low range - wasn't normal driving ;)
