9" VS Nissan = school me please
Ok guys I'm in the middle of a debate with a good buddy of mine as we plan our new buggy builds and we've gotten to diff centre choices.
We can't agree.
9" bomb proof reputation
Nissan bomp proof reputation
Both are unequalled in their respective circles, ie: 9" drag car and Nissan 4wd comps
But if you were goin all out, what would you pick??
Nissan saving grace seems to pure mathematics, the centre is 10.25" vs 9"
We are confused, please help

Ok
All out within relatively realistic financial restraints
What would you pick Evan?

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
I put a high pinion GQ/GU in a hybrid D60 and haven't broken it. I looked at 9" option but $3500 cheaper I thought I'd try the Nissan option first.

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
9" locker and ratio combinations are endless. 9" have aftermarket nodular housings with torque screws and lower deflection technology.
Nissan have well, not alot...
If I were to do everything again I would look at true high 9 gear for size/strength/weight factors. Over my current Dana 60/70 setup

Standard 9'' are nothing to write home about, their advantage is massive after market support and virtually endless upgrades. Nissan diff, you can get, ummmm? ?

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
I would go the 9"'just for the pinion support alone.a full spool 35 spline 9" pretty much any ratio are a lot cheaper than I thought.

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
I went 9" for the tt. the whole center (3rd member) was well under 2k, massive choice of gear ratios, spools, lockers, huge choice of 35 spline axles - mine are 40 spline.
Supported pinion is the advantage.
Mine is nodular iron, with strange / currie parts etc.

How much did it cost to get your patrol center modifyed for 35 spline.WICKED wrote:I put a high pinion GQ/GU in a hybrid D60 and haven't broken it. I looked at 9" option but $3500 cheaper I thought I'd try the Nissan option first.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Just from memory the later arb lockers for nissans can fit the 35 spline toyota adaptors and that is the way people have been doing it.AFeral wrote:How much did it cost to get your patrol center modifyed for 35 spline.WICKED wrote:I put a high pinion GQ/GU in a hybrid D60 and haven't broken it. Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
Only advantage I can see is the extra well supported pinion.
Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
the 9 inch have an odd shaped gear tooth profile, they dont take kindly to being run backwards if you need a high pinion, but they do sell reverse cut gearsets. The 9 inch tooth shape is more like a saw blade, where the nissan tooth shape is like the roofs of a row of houses.
A nissan front diff 3rd member and ring and pinion can be loaded with a rear centre and fitted to the rear housing will lift your tailshaft several inches and be almost as strong as a normal centre.
Horses for courses. I would avoid the 9 inch if you are likely to be reversing under load as can happen in crawlers. I would avoid the nissan diff if you require low unsprung weight they are very heavy, you can get many aluminium parts for the 9 inch. Nissan H233 axles are much heavier than they need to be, the centre is steel and there are no aftermarket options aside from ratios and lockers.
there are two nissan diffs, only the H260 is the 10 inch size, the H233 is a 233mm crownwheel which equals just over 9 inches. there are no H260 front diffs.

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
Has any one seen a Nissan high pinion front fail in front application?
I built mine around the H233b cause I haven't, I did have ever built mine to be 35 spline. If I do break a few Nissan diffs, my axles will fit in any 35spline centre (D60, D76, 9", etc) I'd need a new housing but that's all.
I thought it was worth a try
And as yet I've broken a 37spline H260 axle and an Atlas but nothing in the front diff....

Not of the actual diff's themselves sorry. I will ask next time I see him which bit/s failed.
These are the cards, I think the MWB has done one too.

I wouldn't think so Johnsy but you could have a spare nissan center built Arb Complete center cheaper than a 9" with a spool I'd say. $1200 for locker and $600 mods, $400 new gear set = $2200. Don't think you would get a 9" here for that.....

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
Room mate gets 9" centres built with lightned gears any ratio and spool for $850 he just has to supply a carrier, look on eBay a 35 spline spool is $150 most gear sets are $300 there alot cheaper than I originally thought too.Willy Hilux wrote:I wouldn't think so Johnsy but you could have a spare nissan center built Arb Complete center cheaper than a 9" with a spool I'd say. $1200 for locker and $600 mods, $400 new gear set = $2200. I agree Johnsy.. Even a mega high 9 is only $1600 for the centre with a spool.. and from experience snapping axles in front nissan centres take the locker with it.. Spools are the way to go..

You sure your not getting 80 series confused there? Ive snapped my fair share of cvs and axles and im running a front centre in the rear aswell.....still the original lockers and gears I first put in in 2009.
Im sticking with Nissan centres in my new build.

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
That's cause the cv and axles are your weak link when stepping upto a 35 spline Dana axle instead of the long fields your running ATM that might change and you might start popping centres who knows. It's just preference I can attest to the strength of a patrol centre as its what criddy runs in his buggy but I can also see the benefits of of a 9".

Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
A broken axle taking out the locker would be an axle design fault not a centre fault wouldn't it?
Re: 9" VS Nissan = school me please
Moglux, Don't know where you got your price from for a mega high 9, but you could sell a lot of them from that price but there web site says Complete Mega high 9 with spool is $2695 then you got shipping to Australia.
