if you put it out side it will definatly raise your cog way to high

dunno if this is what graham was talkin 'bout, but if ya have a long cap over the pipe and drill holes into the inner pipe, ya should get plenty of air flow and it's stop rain and stuff coming in...

can i get some feedback as to whether this would be any good? lacks the ram of a snorkel, but other than that??

One thing to remeber with home built air intakes is to up the pipe size from the intake size of the air box.There are frictional loses etc involved.
The other thing to try and avoid is using convoluted piping,
The air rushing over the convolutions creats a whirlpool effect.The higher the air speed the smaller the area left in the centre of the pipe to allow air flow.
