Hi guy's

Looking to beef up an 105 series Landcruiser front axle and notice there is not a huge aftermaket support for this axle . I read that the front axle has a different spline count to a 80 series (larger diameter??) so parts don't just swap over, I also read that the extra width of the 105 comes from the hubs, the housing is essentially the same .

SO my question is, can I replace the 105 centre with an 80 series centre then fit 80 series Longfield (or other) axle/birfield/hubgears ?

Anyone tried it ?

Front axles are the same between 80series and 105series. Front centres, housings, 3rds, axles and gears are interchangeable, not 100% sure on CV's but pretty sure the interchange also. It's the rear axles that are different.

The weakness in the 105series front is due to 2pinion carrier. Change to a four pinion diff cente (most 80series, or ARB, TJM etc) and add a solid pinion spacer.

Thanks for that :armsup: looks as tho' I have made a presumption that the front was different coz the back was . The plan was for an eaton locker, good axles and braced housing . Thanks again

chuck in a hilux 4 pin LSD, I built 1 in my LS1 powered 75 on 80 diffs and never had a single issue, ran 33's 35's 37's without a drama
i build landcruisers......

Long fields fit into 105s perfect. I suggest you put a locker in, treated diff gears if going higher ratio then a solid spacer and set of longs. You will struggle to bust a front diff after that.

Fuck! I wish I new about the 80's being stronger, I just sent a replacement 105 diff for my car that i bought at the wreckers to get new bearings and a solid spacer installed yesteday..... In outers style FFFFUUUUUUCCCCCC

It's the two pinion carrier that let's them down. Not enough beef to keep it all rigid.

Looking through toyodiy, it doesnt show any 80 series as having a 4 planet gear front carrier, unless it has a factory diff locker.

1998 80 series front diff

with the 100 series IFS diff, initially the 2000 model did have a 2 planet gear diff, and they changed to a 4 planet gear diff.

It's too late now, but for future reference are you sure 80s? I know you had an 80 and have a 105 now. Was your 80 a factory turbo import from memory maybe that's the difference?

My diff gave out very easily so I am hoping it was just 11 years of full time 4wd that caused it. I'd be bitterly dissapointed to break one again doing the same stuff. And I didn't get a locker either $$$ just too tight at the moment looked for 2nd hand lockers too for a while. Even standard front diffs are hard to get because there are so many broken one's out there.

That is a 4 pinion carrier from a late 105. Apparently all 105's came with 4 pinion carriers after august 02.

The centre is fully enclosed, cant see into it.

Mine is an 01' no idea what the donor diff is out of though. It was wrapped in plastic from the wreckers still when I dropped it off to the shop to fit the bearings and spacer. I'll have a look when it's back.

I think aug 02 was probably the end of the petrol's so I imagine when they say 'later' 105s they probably mean the diesel's and then I wonder if the ratio's are the same as the petrols?

My 80series had factory locked diffs, those centres are now in my 105series.
Front was basically a straight swap (with minor housing mods)rear was a PITA due to different axles.

I think early 80s had two pinion centres, but thought that changed and they were all 4pinion. I may be wrong :oops:
