Ls1 and 4l80 into gu help!!

Post by ZAPPAGU »

Hi guys,
I'm having a few dramas with the fit up and the end positions the transfer adaptor. The car was a zd30 so I used marks bolt in kit, no welding of mounts. With the whole assembly bolted in the gearbox mount is about 80-90mm out. I have cut mounts off and moved engine forward to line te mount up and save getting tail shafts fabricated but before I fully weld into place was wondering if anybody has done this swap?
The motor looks ok where it is but bit worried its going to stuff other things up, clearances for sump, ext, etc
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers
Karl

Youre using a 4L80...... was the Marks kit made to suit, or the more common 4L60? The 80 is bigger, heavier and longer.

Yeah it was specifically for the 4l80 on to my ZD30 transfer. I dont really want to do tailshaft mods, but the motor will have to go back where it was I think. Otherwise its going to start stuffing around with everything else.
Has no one else done this swap?
Cheers

Where did you get the 80? What was the cost?

The 80 came from a mates 98 6.5td suburban, he split a bore and has gone duramax and Allison, I bought the box and conv for 500. It had been well looked after so should be a good thing, fluids nice and clean.

I put an LS1 4L60e 4spd atlas in my mq. Couldn't find an 80 at the time that I could justify the money on.

Yeah, I got it pretty cheap, my 5 speed had a worn 3-4 synchro and would have needed a freshen plus purchase of clutch and assoc bits so it seemed a cheaper way to go

While your engine mounts may be to suit an ls into 3.0 gu and your transfer adapter may be 4l80 to 3.0gu transfer, it may be worth checking that the whole lot is supposed to work together.
I did 4l80 and LS into a gq. My rear tailshaft is about 90mm shorter than standard. I'd be supprised if you can fit a 4l80 LS combo into a Patrol (gu or gq) retaining the standard crossmember and tailshaft positions. Immediate clashes that come to mind are throttle body and radiator, as well as rear drop sump and tie rod.

Yep your on the money lux. I didn't think it would work either. I've been playing with cars for a long time so when marks told me it would all fit, I was a bit amazed. It obviously doesn't and to make things worse the genie ext I waited a month for don't fit with the engine mount setup from marks. So I have to change the chassis mounts and chuck away the engine plates I've bought. Would have nearly had it fired up today if the exhaust would have fitted!
Bloody cars!
On the plus side, I found that the GQ leaf rear with the big diff has a shorter tailshaft which might work, what did you do with the front one? Get one built?

h260 (leaf diff) flange will not bolt to a h233 flange and no uni can fit a 260 shaft to a 233 flange.

Bit of an update, marks had sold me the wrong kit, they should have sold me the weld in , not bolt in.
Anyhow, the new mounts rocked up, dummy fitted everything, dropped springs out and dropped it first. The transfer has ended up being 50mm out. Still need to get the tailshafts done.
But it's all in and fired up. The extractors fit well. They are a lil close to my shifter cable and linkage, but I think I'll heat wrap them and they will be fine.
Still have a lil to do, but getting there
