Wheel come off
Hi all, I need some advice. I had the rear passenger wheel come off my Hilux last night, it come off at speeds around 30-40kpm. What I want to know what is the possible damage?
I have not had time to have a real good look under there; I put an other wheel back on and I pushed it back and forth. There is no clicking and the wheel looks as though it is spinning true, I can see the drum is bent and you can hear that the brake is rubbing.
What is the best way to tell if the diff is housing is still true, and could there be any damage to the center? It has an ARB air locked.
Am I better off just pulling the diff down to look? I’m hoping not, because I’m wanting to go in a comp up at city view next weekend (2nd - 3ed).
Any help will be a big help
Thanks
Chris

Re: Wheel come off
Had a rear wheel come off my patrol at 70-80kmph other than a big flat spot on my disc and a brown streak on my seat cover all was good. I filed the burs off the disc bolted the wheel back on. 20000km later no worries.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Re: Wheel come off
Yea I’m hoping all I have to do is fit a new drum bark, about the only time I’m happy to have drum brakes on . Ill be pulling the drum off, and axle out and see how they look.
I guess now is a good time to fit new shoes and brake cylinders.

Re: Wheel come off
Were you hanging around with any patrols lately? They do it all the time. Maybe you need a wash and disinfectant
Re: Wheel come off
Big question - Why did it come off? You obviously didn't shear all the studs, so what happened?
I had the rear wheels off my Pajero yesterday. The wheel nuts were looser than when I last tightened them (tyre rotation 300 km ago), although they were still tight. However, being loose could mean that they get cyclically loaded and ultimately fatigue. You have to have the tension in the studs tighter than the fluctuating loads applied to them or else you get changing loads in the studs and they will eventually fatigue. In my case, I can only assume that because I have alloy wheels, the alloy must have crushed a little. I caught it in time, but will keep a check on them now until they settle down properly. How long since you checked your wheel studs???

Re: Wheel come off
The wheel that came off mine was alloy. Two of those wheels came off. First time was considered an accident second time they were removed and not reused. Yes wheel nuts etc were checked. Just seems those wheels were dodgy. Gone back to steel rims no dramas since.

Re: Wheel come off
I doubt the rear diff is bent but a quick little way to check if it's still pointing true is wet an area of flat concrete and drive dead straight across then have a look at the marks left buy your tyres
Re: Wheel come off
Lucky you were going slow, a mate had his 35" simex fly past him at over 100kph going over a dual carriageway and not hitting another vehicle and coming to rest against some ones back fence.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
Re: Wheel come off
Yea I know I was lucky, the damage was low. I pulled the drum off and the axle out, the drum was a bit grazed, and backing plate was bent and ground down at the bottom. I pulled the axle out and the wheel Bering fell apart as I pulled it out. Not sure if this was from the wheel coming off or just wear and tear, I’m guessing it was just old and needed changing.
So I got a new axle and drum from the wreckers because I had a comp on this weekend, and needed a spear. The spear had a good bearing in it and new drum shouse. I also put new inner seals in, I did this to both sides.
All good now, thanks guys for the help
