My courier 2.5 TD has just began running rough on cold and cool start up, a little grey/pale smoke but settles down to a good idle within 5 seconds and runs fine there after. I initially thought glow plugs and pulled them out for a visual, and they were all in great condition, and all in the 1.2-1.3 ohm range. Nothing unusual in coolant, oil or temp, and the fact that it settles down so fast still makes me suspicious of the glow plugs still. A bit of reading on the net and there are lots of stories of high glow plug usage on couriers, mostly sounds like burnt out glow plugs.
Anyone here have any experience with them?
The vehicle has done 290k and hasn't had glow plugs in the 90k that I have put on it.

@ 35 bucks for 4 why not just change them and be done with it, Ive done mine at about each 80K because they take 20 minutes to replace and saves the worryrustyvit wrote:My courier 2.5 TD has just began running rough on cold and cool start up, a little grey/pale smoke but settles down to a good idle within 5 seconds and runs fine there after. And that's probably what I will do, just have an aversion to replacing parts unnecessarily. Where did you get them for $35 bucks? that seams cheap.chris_stoffa wrote:@ 35 bucks for 4 why not just change them and be done with it, Ive done mine at about each 80K because they take 20 minutes to replace and saves the worryrustyvit wrote:My courier 2.5 TD has just began running rough on cold and cool start up, a little grey/pale smoke but settles down to a good idle within 5 seconds and runs fine there after. As a follow up:
I pulled all the glow plugs out again (NGK Y-701J) yesterday, confirmed all had a resistance of between 1.2 - 1.3 range and element condition was visually good. I bought and tested a new set, same range as the old set! fitted them anyway and fired the old girl up this morning and she started like a sewing machine
NGK Y-701J were $18.50 each from Mach one.
