Your inlet tubing is very long, combined with a possibly blocked air filter and you will definitely suck oil past the seals.

Cheers for this.. I'll be getting a compression tester and checking that on the weekend regardless if only to discount it from the equation.

I will do what you suggest and confirm there are no restrictions. It's been suggested to me that sometimes the factory filters are too restrictive and it helps to run a unifilter or K&n allowing more airflow through. This same person thought the vacuum cleaner hose was stiff enough to be ok and not collapse but longer term I'll look at replacing this steam pipe or similar, also making it a simpler bend from the airbox.

Bit of an update.. the 40 is back up and running now..

I checked out the diaphragm governor on the injector pump and discovered it wasnt connected to the rail and a bracket+8mm nut and R clip were missing. I assume what had happened was this disconnected while driving and the rod slid to full fuel position giving full RPM. I had mistakenly assumed it was the turbo and when I first tried to starve it of air I forced it to suck oil past the seals on the turbo, then taking off the intake at the manifold giving the appearance it was the turbo..

I only checked the diaphragm because it does wierd things like increase idle when its got a tear in it.. wouldn't of found this otherwise.
