Hi All
My father in law has a 1997 80 Series with a 1FZ-FE with 150K on it. It regularly 'misses' and loses power which it then finds again and takes off at the usual great rate of knots. This miss seems to be getting worse.
The car has had an odd life in that it doesn't have a huge number of km's as a result of my FIL working offshore for most of the car's life with it sitting in the garage. The second set of tyres, Dunlop Grandtrek AT's actually 'wore out' due to sitting around and this manifested as the tyres developing cracks and leaking but had HEAPS of tread!
My gut feeling is that it's the fuel injectors and he should just either pay the $300-400 to get the injectors cleaned OR just get a new set ($2500 quote from Toyota).
Can ANYONE recommend a good mechanic/fuel injection specialist on Brissies's Northside that KNOWS the 1FZ-FE and can offer some help? Alternatively, can anyone on here offer any assistance? He's a great old bloke and has put a pile of money into the car and really wants to go on a Cape Trip and I'd really appreciate it if anyone could offer some advice.

Has car been sitting for a long time? If so dump fuel and run some injector cleaner through the new fuel.

I agree with the above. Fuel does go off and I'd say that over its life it's ingested a lot of bad fuel which could be fouling the system. I would say that a good start would be to dump ALL the fuel and run a tank with a strong mix of injector cleaner and fuel conditioner, as ell as inspecting the spark plugs

Ray @ Hendra Motors, Hendra. Google the number. Knows everything toyota and some misc camel info too. After the above advice I'd give it an Italian tune up.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.

When were plugs last changed? I'd be checking them too

Re: 1FZ-FE Occasional Miss
Hi all
Thanks for the responses guys. My FIL retired 3 years ago, so it's more of a long term issue.
He's put a few courses of injector clean through it to no avail.
I'll try the Hendra bloke Scanas, ta for that.

Re: 1FZ-FE Occasional Miss
My 105 cruiser when I had it had an issue once when it would run like shit and it backfired thru the intake 2 times. It was the gas playing up and had 2 burnt out plugs and wasn't running on all 6 properly.
This could be something worth looking at thus the plug question. If the plugs and leads haven't been changes since ever then change them out an eliminate that. Saves paying labor on a job you can do.

Re: 1FZ-FE Occasional Miss
Thanks for the plug Dan although I reckon I know lots more about camels than I do about Toyotas.
Does it miss at idle or only under load? Is it dual fuel and if so, does it play up on both LPG and petrol or only petrol?
There are a number of common problems that can occur on the 1FZ-FE. Air flow meter, oxygen sensor, coolant temperature sensor and fuel pressure regulator are all known to play up and can cause rough running but can be a little involved to diagnose. Something that is easy to check yourself is the intake hose between the air flow meter and throttle body. Any air leak there will cause problems, check for loose clamps/splits/holes. As the guys above have said, if you don't know the history on the plugs/leads/distrubutor cap/rotor they should be checked and replaced if needed first before looking too closely at the EFI system/components. If you like, do these basics yourself to save yourself some cash and let us know how you go. Otherwise give me a call and I'll help as needed.
Cheers,
Ray
