TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
Hey Guys,
Just wondering how much torque the standard N/A black top TD42 could handle, theres been a lot of talk about HP, but thats not what I'm chasing.......If it happens to be a byproduct of torque tho..... :-)
If you haven't guessed, I have a black top N/A engine and was curious just how much you could wring out of it with a TD05h or similar set up, intercooled and maybe Water/Meth injected. Basically built for daily driver, with lots of low to midreange torque being chased
I was hoping for something around 500 - 600 nm ATW, is this out of the question?
Thanks in advance guys.....
Dano.

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
at the end of the day, anything over about 10-12 pound on a blacktop is going to start stressing the pistons. I ran mine at 14psi with 25% gas for 100K before it cracked no. 5.
also, TD42 all sort of rev to the same point, unless highly modified, and as HP is a multiple of torque, you are not going to squeeze any more torque out of it for less HP than the quoted figures.
tune it to do what you want, when it breaks, spend the 8-10K and rebuild it

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
I'd be happy to get another 100 k out of it with more grunt! I only do about 10 k a year if I'm lucky :-)
What sort of torque could I expect at 10 to 12 pound? Approx of course ;-)
Cheers Dano

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
I would have to check my old graph, dont know off the top of my head, you wont be disappointed though if it does what my old motor did.
at that 14psi with the gas, the ute weighed 3 tonne, and it would pull a 5+tonne trailer at 110 quite happily. realistically trailer was probably closer to 6. private roads of course.

Of course it was private rd, I had 4.5t on my 700kg trailer and couldn't get out of 3rd, pus bucket :-) oh yeah, also private rd;-)
Thanks for the info mate

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
I run a GQ black top in my Gu race truck. Only mod is turbo pistons. Other than that its all stock. Has well over 600nm of torque. The biggest torque related issue is the crank. But you have to be pushing over 200hp to worry about that

What's the difference between a "black top" and a TD42 that's.........not one?Tomo_89 wrote:I run a GQ black top in my Gu race truck.
Apart from the colour.
Not dead yet!
Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
Silver top GQ motors are the same design as the UD trucks. Then in 95 they lightened them up a bit by using lighter pistons as they were not turbo from factory. Then when they brought out the turbo GU they went back to the heavier pistons and a slightly stronger crank. The flywheels also differ from Gq to Gu. The naturally aspirated Gu motor is essentially 'run out' Gq stock when Nissan first started building the gu. On the outside a silver top has the vac pump on the alternator and the black top is on the timing case

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
Thanks.
Always wondered.
So if you were going to get a TD42 for a rebuild, you'd go a black top?

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
No, the silver top is stronger, although if rebuilding I would put GU turbo pistons in it whatever it was (cheap from SMS diesel and mine are holding up just fine, recently inspected them and after 50,000 still look like new)
if you were buying one to rebuild I would consider hunting down a long motor if they are still going cheap.

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
Hey mate.
I have a 96 black top, which has been turbo'd and intercooled, it current has 180kw and 759Nm torque with a gtx3071r, If you can get factory turbo engine parts that will be the go. For reasons already stated in this thread,
My old turbo was a td05h 16g from the off the shelf DTS kit, I managed to get 21psi out of it and managed just over 150kw and about 500Nm torque,
Once I realised I making a considerable amount of torque, crank snapping was a worry and on my mind a fair bit.
From what I have read and been told that alot of the snapped cranks are the guys who are also running a viper clutch, I just have a 4 terrain clutch and hope that it will be a 'fuse' so to speak, I would much rather that the clutch will smoke up before the crank will snap.
Cheers
Benny

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
really good thread about that on patrol4x4 where oldmav actually measured the harmonics and the effects different weight crank had. it not the torsional load so much as it is the harmonics I believe and removing a bit of weight out of the clutch brings that harmonic point down further into the common rev range.
also, how many of the motors with snapped cranks are running very old, rock hard harmonic balancers?

As for the harmonic balancers probably a few, also how many are making big torque turning big tyres and stock gearing with little to no mechanical sympathy? So many variables I guess and no real defined answer so to speak?

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
So is the factory turbo engine in the GU stronger?
How do you tell if it's genuine factory turbo motor? Have they got different rover covers?
Also what sort of fuel economy do you get empty around town in a stocker?

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
I think I'll get a turbo kit and drive it till it pops, as the old buggers got about 400k on the clock, then I'll worry about it :-)
After reading this, I'll be looking for TD42t internals......
Cheers, Dano.

ben,
this is the thread which discusses harmonics.

Re: TD42 Question for the Turbo Gods :-)
Bulk torque at low revs on big tyres and 4.1 diffs seems to be part of the crank snapping recipe.
Add a driver with no mechanical sympothy and it is complete.
There are other little factors we suspect might be involved, but only time will tell.
Snapping a crank is really not on my list to worry about yet and for 99% of people it won't be either.

Hi Tommo, not sure your correct about the vac pump, I have a 94 Series 2 black top that runs the vac pump on the back of the alt. Just wanted to let you know incase someone was looking for particular detail mate.
