Gearbox with top gear of 0.7 ish???
Just wondering if anybody has any knowledge of a gearbox that may be able to be used in a Hilux with a top gear of around 0.7??
My ideal top gear would be 0.724 but close enough will be good enough.
Nearly every factory Hilux box is a top of 0.851 or thereabouts but I'm wanting just that bit more.
Not fussed if it's achieved by a 5spd or 6spd, Hilux box, supra/celica box etc or whatever just curious if anyone knows of anything about.

What engine is this for ?
Be aware the R154 has a 30mm longer input shaft than the R150/151's so it will not be a straight bolt up without a spacer or modified bellhousing, depending on your engine.
If you can locate a R452 trans from a Dyna truck its overdrive gear is a straight swap into a R150/151 and it will give you 0.7, ie a 30% overdrive.

Ok the R154 will not fit behind a 2.8 unless you mod the bell, fab a spacer or have one cast.
However, you could do research on the later Prado and Hilux's that used the R series and their bellhousings as I understand they used a longer input shaft R series, but how much longer than the older R series, that I don't know. Their bell would need to be an extra 30mm longer than yours to use a 154.
I actually use a R154 in my 4Runner behind a 347 Ford but I had Dellows make a bell 15 years ago. The R154's overdrive can also be changed from (0.75) 25% to (0.63) 37% which I have also done. Cruising in overdrive is a hoot

Otherwise you could check out the ads in the truck magazines. Some companies will do the searching for you.
If you go with a dyna box you have to consider the transfer case.
Another option is an R151 with the safari overdrive replacement.

However I have my other set of diffs with 5.71:1 gears in the shed and mathematically a top gear of 0.724 will create the same top gear as 4.88 on 0.851 although with a much larger spread below so top end speed should be no different.
The big thing I like about the lower diff gears is all the stress it relieves from the rest of the running gear by everything being able to turn easier, it was the best thing I ever did to my last truck and I subsequently had way less breakages, so I'm keen to work out a way to re-emulate that again. What do you think bud?

Ok now I see why, ie using the 5.71's.
Here's what would be involved;
R154.
Find and purchase a R154 (Usually around $1500)
Locate/purchase a R150/151 output shaft and have it swapped into R154 ($$$$- ?)
Mod or have a bell made ($$$$ - ?)
All too costly and should you ever screw the R154 you will have to find another and they are not easily found.
R150/151 - Recommended Option
First you would need to determine what 1st gear you want, ie a R150(3.83) or a R151(4.31)
Then whatever deal costs less, either purchase a trans and bell from a 2LTE Surf selecting either the R150 or R151 as Surfs came with both or V6 4Runners only had the R150 and you get a bell from a Surf etc, bolt it all up and you're done.
R150/151's are also easy to find and a lot cheaper than 154's.
Eventually swap in the 5.71's and test with stock OD gears and if ok leave it.
If not, keep an eye out for a R452 and swap its OD gears in when available etc. Can be done from underneath if you have gear pullers.
Also you can always easily swap back to original gears and diffs, if required or circumstances change etc.

If I recall correctly it was pretty pricey anyway. But it might have been worthwhile if you could save by not having a custom bell housing etc.

Cheers Bud, im intrigued, nowhere in there does it mention anything about Hilux's or Surf's and yet it has the same R151 model designation for the box, makes me wonder if that is the same box? If indeed it is then no wonder we consider it a bloody strong gearbox when cruisers run it behind the big 4.2 Litre diesels.
Price said $1595rrp but with a discount to $1275 for that group buy. Jeez thats expensive for one gear!

Another option might be to get an engineering firm to make up some gears for you, if all you want is the taller 5th and are happy with the other 4 (technically 3) gears

I think there must be a difference between 1HZ Rs and Lux based Rs, we have run them behind V8s in our club, some even turboed 5.0s, and never busted them. You do need to ensure you don't overstress 5th in lo range though.
I was given to understand there is a shaft coupler in there that perhaps has less splines on the 1HZ units.
Our cars aren't light once diff conversions and full barwork are taken into consideration either.
Perhaps someone can share some light on the issue with 1hz units.

I read somewhere that some R boxes came with one piece main shafts or something, making them the strongest ones?

The third/fourth hub strips the splines. Never boxes have longer splines.Struth wrote:

It's probably more of an issue with landcruisers like the 105 which are often well overloaded and towing and likely to spend a fair amount of time at full load in third or fourth.

Bit of an update fellas.
Since the last post I've located both an R151f and an R452 so happy days!!
The R151f I've already picked up and gotten home whereas the R452 is getting bought over next weekend from out west so can't actually start yet but should be a good thing.
Ozrunner - thanks for introducing me to this particular idea man, I've done TONS of reading and explored every option mentioned above by everyone and after delving in to the R452 gear it sounds awesome.
