Cleaning a grease/grime off a gearbox

Post by Canyonero 4x4 »

G'day folks.

My gearbox\tranfer has been weeping from somewhere for sometime and I have neglected it. It is now time to find out what it is that's leaking so to do that I need to clean it. It is covered in that thick greasy grime shit and over time it has coated everything near by.
So far I have sprayed 250mm of undiluted degreaser over it and put $5 in the local DIY carwash and gernied the fuck out of it. Got rid of alot but there's still plenty there. It's now soaking in another 250mm of degreaser and I will gernie that lot shortly.
Any other tips?
Is there anything that it is most likely to be?

Well it's not a very good personal lubricant and it's a terrible pie topper.

It would clean a dirty box nicely but there might be a lot of noise out of it for a while after

"Warm coke believe it or not works a deadest treat "
Some years ago, I was arranging for some machining of heavy and large Hydro turbine components. These normally needed a vertical boring machine and there aren't many in the country. I went to Crib Point Engineering in Tyabb (Vic) to review their facilities. They had just refurbished and machined the split faces in the turbine housings for a large steam turbine. They had to be flat within 0.05 mm from end to end, and no more than 0.02 mm step where they had to restart machining. They tried all sorts of cutting fluids with their end mills, but the best they found by far was Coke. Appaerently it caramelises at the cutting tip and provides effective lubrication. If you drop a small pebble into a bottle of coke, it dissolves it very fast too.
