'modular' roll cage for a 40
Hey guys,
just thinking out loud... We're trying to downsize the 100series and in doing that, it only leaves us the 40 as a 'camping' vehicle (we'd have to get a trailer to bring all our crap)... anyway.. we've got 2 kids and currently the 40 is mod plated as a 2 seater + roll bar...
If I was to set up a rear seat in the 40 I would also want to ensure that the rear of the 40 is adequately protected by a roll bar.. and this is where my question comes in.. Realising the QCOP/NCOP changes as of 1st may mean you can't have roll bar at the A pillar what's the go with building a 6 point cage but making the front hoop and tie-in's into the B pillars removable?
I'm just thinking about purchasing a metal tech cage(http://www.metaltech4x4.com/p-9-fj40-la ... e-kit.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), modifying it so the front A pillar is removable, then getting it mod plated as a B/Cpillar cage with the rear seats? If/when I go wheeling I can bolt in the A pillars..?
Feel free to shoot me down if I'm talking shit but want to make sure that the kids are protected in the rear seats and its legal.
Cheers,
Andrew

Re: 'modular' roll cage for a 40
Keep the 100 sell the 40. Your not going to be doing the usual 40 stuff with kids in the back and / or relying on it to get you home. Save one rego, one insurance, two services a year plus other running costs.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
Re: 'modular' roll cage for a 40
The rego on the 40 isn't much being a 4 banger and with not much driving its servicing costs arent much either.. its the fuel economy of the uzj thats killing us at 20l/100kms and mostly city driving, as nice a vehicle as it is we just can't afford to keep it..
I dont expect to have kids in the car when wheeling but we'd still need to get places so the roll cage requirements are more for on road piece of mind/compliance.
I've invested way too much time, money and effort into the 40 and therefore will never sell it anyway.. some cash from the sale of the 100 will allow me to make the 40 a little more kid friendly..

Why not just add the rear hoop you need at the back, join to your existing cage and just get the extra seats approved?

Re: 'modular' roll cage for a 40
Removeable A pillar section and tie ins would be 100% legal and has been suggested in other threads.
The downside is it would be a major pain in the arse to have it in your trailer, and install it when you get to private property somewhere.
The reality is, you will either leave it at home most of the time, or leave it installed most of the time.

Re: 'modular' roll cage for a 40
I am building a 40 series with a rear seat and wanting a full cage for the family and was advised to have a removable 'A' pillar bar, due to the stupid rule change.
My cage will stay in permantely and remove the 'A' pillar if i have any problems.
Seems to be safer with a proper 6 point cage for a soft top.
The metal tech cage looks good but the freight is quite dear.

Just do B-C pillars, you will achieve a good sound & safe cage as long as you approach it correctly & will be safe. I can help you with layout Andy.

Re: 'modular' roll cage for a 40
Cheers Brooksy.... We're still toying with the idea at the moment.. currently we're both willing to see if we can survive with the uzj100 a bit longer.
Does anyone know the consequences of having a modular cage with A pillars installed and then get caught without a mod plate for the full cage? I have mod plate for roll bar but I doubt it would extend to A pillar or would the fuzz not pick it?
Do roll bar vs full cage inc A pillar have different mod codes?
*Edit* Just checked then.
I currently have LK1 - LH8 mod plated
QCOP 01Jan2011 states
LK1 - for seat change (so still valid)
LH8 - Not in use (but is now possibly LK8)
Looks like LK8 explicitly doesn't cover any brace along the a pillar.
But then didn't the introduction of QCOP mean that you can't plate 6 pt cages so I wont find an equivalent code in current modification guides..?
If thats the case what was the mod code for cages prior to the introduction of QCOP that allowed pt cages?

Re: 'modular' roll cage for a 40
I'm not sure as my mod plate with various codes is still being held by engineer until I finish doing all the codes. Twisty may know as he has all the same codes as I do.
Repercussions on having A pillar fitted onroad, again I don't know but if in an accident I prefer to know I'm 100% legal which is why I am going to such details on mine & Daves.
