That is what I am asking, is the tank shit, or is it fit for the purpose? Answer the question or fuck off.

Am I invoking thought , Yes , it is highly likely "fit for purpose"
and its probable that you would lose the arguement

I did answer your question and still you wouldn't fuck off

Chris stoffa,

so after offering your opinion as a NDT tech, but not as someone who can weld, you commented on the quality of the weld, but not its ability to do its job, at no point did you address the actual questions I asked.
Where did I say I couldnt weld, you did , I didnt, I may have NDT formal qualifications but that does not preclude the ability to weld, been doing it since I was about 12 on the farm and over the past 40 years

I did I said I believed that you would lose the argument as they would be seen to be 'fit for purpose"............ what part of that are you failing to understand ? Did I not answer your question? and address the question you asked

You then continued to reply again and again with comments unrelated to what I asked, and acted as though I had said things as truth, when in fact I was asking if my beliefs were right or not.

Its not your beliefs that some are questioning its your assessment of a consumer situation and you don't seem to be able accept any other opinion other than your own and obviously can't make a decision

I have actually received very little in opinions on the question I asked relating to the tank, the welds and its ability to do what I want it to do and more about what I should have done and my personality traits for not doing that.

It would seem that no matter what anyone offered you in product or opinion , and you have received a few so far, they all seem unacceptable to you as they don't meet with your satisfaction even after having been told in spades that either your expectations are unrealistic or in reality you are being unrealistic

If you don't like it send it back ......... by your own words you won't be satisfied with it and they aint going to change it to suit you , seems you don't understand what they are telling you again in spades , everyone else gets it except you.

OP, take the money and send the tank back knackers, I am all for fighting the good fight, but some times you are just going to come out the looser, and this instance you have an easy out

NDT tech or not Chris_Stoffer, I will take Struths and awill4x4, statements as gospel when it comes to welding

Either way, the OP should have save the ulcer and just sent the thing back

Thanks, have contacted, also contacted a couple of people selling brown davis tanks, which look a little neater but waiting on detailed photos.
Nearly a jerry can worth of fuel less in the brown davis tank is quite a bugger....

Was not them, I will retain the name of the company until after all is resolved.
I have contacted them about a larger tank and some detailed happy snaps of the construction as the largest they do for the pootrol is 146L

Jeebus! I'm only a third yr boilermaker/welder so I don't have the experience on my side such as struth or awill, but fark I'd be downright embarrassed and ashamed if I ever were to let a product leave my workbay in that condition. Unfortunately it is a true indication of that fact; price, quality, time. You can have 2 but very rarely with mass produced items will you get all 3.

Hope all works out for you bud, a name and shame after this ordeal wouldn't go astray either

Basically, there is no way to tell if the welds are upto task without testing. Be that in a workshop or by using it for a few hundred thousand ks. Mid welds that look great can be weak as piss, and I've seen bird poo mig welds outlast the item they were holding together.

However if the manufacturer is saying that's how we make them and we are not going to change, then it implies that their results are satisfying for the need of the product.
When a manufacturer of expensive items sees failures they re assess production. They don't just accept a bunch of scrap product worth $1200 a pop on a regular basis if the can alter production methods. If they have an 8 week lead time on production then they are even more likely to avoid remaking warranty product as it is costing not just the cost of production of an item but the sale they could have had if it were available as stock.

For me this tells me its probably upto its task - we are only talking a couple of hundred kilos tops. Each inch of weld holds how much weight? I cant remember but its a fair bit.

But as said earlier if your not happy with the product - it will be in the back of your mind... forever! so ship it back, even at $100 cost to yourself take your money and run - peace of mind is worth that.

But - best outers thread Ive seen in ages... it even has replies!

It is difficult to tell the integrity of most welds by a surface visual. I was involved in inspecting fabricated product for over 15 years. There is a visual expectation and a functional specification.
As stated earlier in this thread some welds that look crap test perfectly ok. Normally a macro section but then the job is scrapped.
Cheap labour can be taught to weld and get it functionally correct. Some people can holds a nice steady hand some cannot.
The welders are normally set to one setting and the operator has to work in that window.
The welds on your tank, whilst looking visually poor may be perfectly fit for purpose.
There is no way to tell. Even the weld that looks under cut or layered up may not pass a visual test but if sectioned, might more than meet requirements for penetration and bead size.
Large companies with this sort of product only certify/train the welder for the type of work they are doing. Also they are not welding gas pipelines......
What was told to you was more than acceptable. If you do not like the visual aspects and the supplier has offered a refund take it.
He could also of said its fits for pupose, our testing and warranty history has proven it.. bye..no grounds for refund.
