A friend's coily troopy (Hzj78?) has had the gearbox die for the third time, he is quite over it. It has no drive in any gear, accompanied by loud grinding clunking noise. The truck has an everyday weight of nearly 4 tonnes as measured on the dump weighbridge, it is his work vehicle, self employed, and after three boxes have expired, he is wanting something stronger.
Searching the net, it appears there is a sleeve which strips the splines, in between the gearbox and transfer case. Could be an easy fix, but 2nd gear crunches everytime, so as mentioned already, he is over it.
So, the questions are... Is the H151F a direct bolt in swap with the exception of clutch/flywheel fix ?? ie transfer (pt), driveshafts, mounts, bellhousing, wiring, shifters etc.
Is the H55F an option, he has access to a complete 1993 Hzj75rv with said tranny in it (owner wants 5k for whole car). The H55F is a stronger transmission (than R151F), is this a bolt in affair ??
Which option (including a brand new genuine transmission) is likely the best and/or cheapest way ??
Thanks, Will.

Re: Troopy gearbox swap?
Ha he looked at new trannys?
From Toyota they are $500 dearer than a rebuilt unit (which never replaced the gears and other wear items)
I paid $3100 for a H55 (from memory)

Re: Troopy gearbox swap?
He is considering a new one, however a new one will still be a weak box, he needs stronger hence looking at other options. Being I will probably be the sucker to install it, I need to know what I can fit, with the least amount of grief. Will the H55f bolt in, ie did the Hzj75 and Hzj78 have same driveshafts (length/flange), same gearbox-transfer length, same wheel base, same gearstick mountings etc
He has access to a complete car, but I dont want to fit the H55f and find out this is too short, that is too long, the gearshift is wrong etc etc.
As I understand it, the H151f is a bolt-in option, but being a turbo box, it has a different input shaft spline, and a different clutch/flywheel diameter. Also the turbo models were AWD (80 + 100 series), the troopy is a part-time 4WD, will the part-time transfer case fit the back of the turbo box??

I've just put an A440F auto transmission and an 80 series full time transfer with a part time conversion into my 1995 1HZ HZJ75
