Diesel - What goes into it?

Post by date »

Today, I did the unthinkable - I started doing some preventative maintenance. I know - I can hear the howls now - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Anyway, I decided to check the fuel filter on my Pajero. Very minor amount of dirt in the bottom of the filter and no water that I could see. Very good, but the diesel smelled like Kerosene. I know that diesels can run on just about anything, but the smell I remember of diesel was a lot more - well, dieselly. The last 3 fills of fuel have been from Shell Fyshwick ACT, so it isn't the cheap and nasty stuff. The colour was a pale green, but I have been putting small amounts of 2 stroke oil into the tank as well.

So what goes into diesel? I cannot complain if it is Kero, because I am coming up to 900 km from this tank, and the fuel gauge is still above 1/4 of a tank (tank capacity 83L). It just seems funny stuff. It isn't winter mix either, because the last lot was bought about 6 weeks ago, and I doubt that the winter mix would be in at that stage. Any clues as to what it is?

Yes kero is used in the winter mix

cooma would have runned it for ages
but being in canberra where you filled up.
being another cold place see the reasoning

They run planes on that kero

Ooh how lovely and sweet it smells when burnt

Maybe it is winter mix. Canberra is fairly cold (similar to Cooma, but 6 weeks ago neither place was cold). I have heard that Cooma runs winter mix all year round. It could be Kero added simply to cut the costs as well, who knows? It does smell like diesel, but I am sure there is some Kero in there as well.
