disco 24 spline axles

disco 24 spline axles
G'day all,
is it worth converting to 24 spline disco axles? I would eventually go to maxi drive axles, but considering changing to the disco axles now that I'm running 255/85 R16 tyres.
considerign running a locker too...but SHHH
will the disco inner axles fit my 84 RR?

I've been on these for about 2 years with a combo of 255/85-16 Cooper ST, STT and Simex 33x10.5 JT2's and they have been good. A mate in Vic with a lead foot runs the stockers with 32x9.5 Simex ET's and they have been good. A guy in the states snapped 2 axles crawling with 32's and a locker. I think they are ok, but it will depend on what you do with them DAS. Another mate with 33x13.5" Claws blew his factory diff before the axles gave in.
Don't know about the fit though.

the 24 splines don't last long in the front with a locker, but mine lasted quite well in the rear with a locker.
but if you are getting a locker - or simply having the hassle of changing from 10 to 24 spline diffs then think about going the whole hog at once. It's cheaper than doing it one step at a time if you get locker/axles/R&P at one hit and the diff won't be in and out like a yoyo.

There are two problems with the 24 spline axle upgrade to your 84. First, the side gears in your diff will need to be changed to suit the 24 spline. Ifr you cvan pick up a cheap centre with a shtredded crown wheel and pinion, you may be able to poach the hemisphere from the busted diff and put it in your Rangie, ot better yet and easier is to get an entire center from a later S1 Disco and axles as a package.
Secondly your flange is totalllyu diffrent. The hubs will also need changing as the earliwer flange is a 'mushroom' type flange wheras the later Disco is a flater style flange (the later 10 splines like on my 92 Rangie are also the flat type, which makes getting axles a pain in the arse as I found out several months ago!!).
If you still are keen to upgrade, it would be easier and less mucking around to pick up a complete 24 spline rear end off a Disco wreck. The fitment is straight forward with a few diffrences here and there.
For all the effot, it may be better to go a Maxi-Drive locker. It may cost more initally, but you fix your strength problems pertty much in one hit.
Jusdt a few thoughts on the matter.

G'day,
Okay I was planning on fitting ARB locker, but don't want crap 10 spline, so thought I could go to 24 spline, and use disco axles for now. and go to maxi's later
But by the looks of it I have to get maxi's axles anyway....both front and rear for 24 spline with lockers.
PS I have the 4.1's already fitted

DAS - what sort of tyres do you have?
I'm doing the 33" thing too - 255/85 is the go for the slim folds of the svelt Rangie, but I just can't make up my mind on which tyre to go with.
Bloody hard finding some 2nd hand, resolved to going brand new.
But not much choice in this size new either!
I have Coopers ST at the mo, and think they're pretty good.
BFG MT sound fine, just worried about on-road handling/noise.
What you got and are you happy?
Thanks,
Hardy
