1993 - 80series manual locking hub conversion Q?
G'day peeps..
I'm in the process of doing a SAS on my V8 Surf using 93 model 80series diff's front & back but plan on leaving the Hilux gear-driven transfer which is attached to a TH350 transmission so I would prefer to have manual locking hubs as per reasons below...
So the thing here is I have read else where that if I run M/L Hubs (Aisins) that I will need to use shim washers at the CV ends to stop end float... OK so where can I get these shim washers or can I make some or do I actually need them?
Now in saying that also which model Aisin hubs should I be purchasing? 40-60-75 & early 76-85 Hilux M/L Hubs seem to all be the same from what i'v found whilst researching...
I plan later on to run with Longs or Nitro axles & CV's so may as well go with M/L Free wheeling hubs straight up which obviously reduce wear on Axles/CV's when tranny & free wheeling hubs are NOT engaged Correct?
I did a search & now my head is hurting lol! So some advice would be muchly appreciated ...
Cheers

I've got a 93 80 series running hilux freewheeling hubs with no shim needed. From what I understand the later models cv's are longer and foul on hub. The cv's can be cut and circlip groove re-grooved.

Cool
Cheers man!
Do you know if the F/W-Hub you used are from a late or early Hilux & if they were from a solid axle Lux or IFS?
I want to buy new Aisin's but also want to make sure I get the correct ones first go!
Yeh from what i'v researched it's the later ABS 80 series that have the longer CV spline & also run the brass shims, I think

Re: 1993 - 80series manual locking hub conversion Q?
Apparently 60 series ones are stronger. Hilux ones would be out of solid front.

Its post 92 AWD's that have the longer cv spline, and longer matching drive flange. The AWD's were wearing in the splines between drive flange and cv so they made the engaged spline section longer.
I dont know of any brass shim.
If you want to use aisin FWH's on a post 92 AWD diff, you either replace the cv with a non AWD cv, or cut the end off the cv and machine a new circlip groove.
ORRR some people have placed an 8mm spacer between the FWH Body and the Wheel HUB, and use 8mm longer studs. This is dodgy and i would never recomend it. It puts more load on the studs
Ive read one guy on here has used the AISIN FWH's by just placing a second circlip behind the circlip on the end of the cv which pulls the cv out 3 or 4mm. WHen i did some measuring the difference between cv's is more like 8mm and any end float will allow the cv to contact the back of the alloy selector handle which could result in it grinding away at the alloy while its in free position since the hub is turning but the cv isnt.
All aisin hubs off toyotas are the same.
If you want to use Longs, your best ordering the chromo drive plates aswell as Longfields for 80's only come in the longer cv for AWD's because 90% of yank 80's were AWD
Ive heard its possible to get longfield to cut the cv down and remachine the circlip groove for you, so that you can run Aisin FWH's, but then you would want to order the longfield chromo hub gears aswell otherwise even your aisin hub will explode and any damage to the longs caused by a failed oem hub gear or drive plate voids the lifetime warranty
At the end of the day, the increased wear on the diff is negligable, and the increased fuel usage from turning the front diff is negligable aswell. It might be easier just to put the drive plates back on and ignore it!. Thats what i did.

Re: 1993 - 80series manual locking hub conversion Q?
Thanx fella's
One thing tho is .. i'm sure the IFS & solid axle FWH hubs are different cause they state on sellers listings what type your in need of so that's one thing i'm unsure about
I found a link today of how a fella cut his own new ring groove with a cutting disc on a grinder while someone spun the diff pinion LMFAO Bwahahaha.. But reckons it worx great..
I bought a bodgy rear TH350 output shaft off Marks & I could not get the T/C to mate up by about 7mm & machined it myself to fit so looking like i'm gonna be machining my own ring groove
& lopping the CV shaft the difference in length of groove separation... Not a biggy..
But i'm still stuck on what FWH to buy as I can get a set of IFS Aisin hubs for a 6 pack

Re: 1993 - 80series manual locking hub conversion Q?
Different splines on cv end I think ifs is 27 and 80 series are 30. Easy way to find out, if he has a cv lying round take a drive flange and see if it fit.
Shadow I have an 1993 awd 80 with free wheel conversion and don't need any spacers.

Ok might be 94 they did the upgrade.
I know the upgrade was earlier than the brake upgrade and tow capacity change

Re: 1993 - 80series manual locking hub conversion Q?
Stilivn you are correct well almost....
IFS hilux,Surf & 4runner have 26 spline drive gear/cv end tooth count
Solid axle Hilux/cruisers have 30 spline
So Shadow that's the verdict & like I mentioned before it's the ABS models that have longer CV spline...
Yes .. mine have the bigger brakes with rear discs & there from a 93 model I think pre 1992 models had the smaller brakes & only drums out back...
Thanx all, great discussion

Re: 1993 - 80series manual locking hub conversion Q?
Another option, pick up the ifs hubs and rebuild with cromo 30 spline gears, prob still cheaper than buying new.

I run aisin hubs on both my 80s with longs.
The new style longs Come with 2 grooves, do you can cut them down to suit aisins.
On my Ute I have solid axle hilux hubs with chromo hub gear
On my wagon I have 75 series hubs with the chromo hub gear
