Hi everyone, just got a couple of quick q's about the 3.5 v6 motor. Im currently cheakin out a j top with a 3.5 in it, and have noticed that some people on here have spoken about a 3.5 sohc. Now i understood that the 3.5's were all doch 24 valve, like the badge on mine says. So is there both a single cam and twin cam 3.5, and if so, what is mine (incase it's just a sticker on the side if the j top), the j top being a 96 with full options (elecs, abs, airbag, 5spd, etc)?

Also, what potential do these motors have performance wise. I mean, can u increase the 153kw quite easily say with a k&n filter, hi-flow exaust, extractors, etc?

There are two 3.5L v6's. The DOHC edition came out first around 96, then around 98-99 the 3.5L SOHC edition came out. The DOHC engine is the same design that was in the 3000gt. The main differences being that the dohc engine was more of a revver than the SOHC engine. This meaning the torque is found higher up in the revs. So as long as you keep it alive, it will be happy. I remember reading somewhere that Mitsubishi were in a rush for a 3.5 so they chucked the DOHC versions in as a "get them by" measure, until the SOHC was ready for the later model. How true, don't know.

The other pronounced difference is the DOHC are not gas happy. The SOHC 3.5L though is fine.

Anyway, they both propel the car, so unless you wanted gas, then no worries!

BTW the 3.5l DOHC were gas happy but only in the NK range from late 96 to early 97.


The DOHC is certainly a revver & you do have to kep it high up in the revs for peak power, but it is a delightfully smooth engine & I have had no trouble with mine & I've done 260,000ks now .

Over the years I have had many things done to improve power (especially on LPG) but none seemed to make any difference. They were dual map Unichip (waste of$ IMO), Genie headers (another waste of$, as both sets have developed cracks). KN filter.
Non of these mods IMO gave any better performance although the dyno did show a graph that indicated more power wuth the Unichip but I think he was just telling me what I wanted to hear.

The only mod I believe gave me abit more pep was swapping in 4.90 front & rrear gears, but still not a bang for buck mod.
I was even thinking of supercharging but gave up on that idea as there didnt seem any one around willing to take it on & also NRMA said they wouldnt insure it.

RPW in Perth specialise in Mitsu motor performance but dont seem to have a lot for the 3.5l DOHC.

Apart from the above there is not a lot of stuff around for the 3.5lDOHC motors as far as performance mods go.

If I ever have to replace my motor I was just thinking of getting a performance rebuild. I did think about engine swaps at one stage but all were frought with problems & were big $$$.

I think that if you except the motor for what it is you will be happy.

BTW what is a jtop is it a shorty becasue if it is then it will fly with a 3.5ldohc in it.

The Jtop would fly with the 3500 DOHC. I know that mine pulls 180kms and thats with the SOHC and loaded with all the crap.

150kw up ya freckle in a very light car, what more do ya want!

What sort of $$ for the Jtop?

Best improvement I have found for my 3.5 DOHC has been the larger diameter free flow exhaust, lots more power midrange and more torque down low where it needs it most, and best of all it sounds great. Extractors don't seem to do much good based on others experience, air filter changes (K&N, Unifilter etc) give a small increase.

Would love to have one in a shorty.
3.5 L with too much stuff, and a front locker waiting on the shelf.

Ok, first of all, thanks for all ur comments/advice, its all been lapped up and i'll use it when i've finally got my Paj.
Seconldly, the j top is exactly the same as a swb, but it has a soft top rear. They look pretty cool, esp with the roof off, (pic attatched below).
And im impresses with the 180kmh, i'll have 2 streatch it out one time 2 have a look myself :lol: . Price is around 18 large, which i realise is not exactly a bargin, but this truck is in awsome cond, with only 70 odd thousand k's.
Lastly, i think i'll be fitting a nice 2.5" exaust as soon as im sick it standard, along with a k&n.

i thought it was weird that it is such a late model but is the old shape..
good buy, very tidy unit. should try to get it a bit cheaper than 18 as its been for sale for a looong time.

PajMan can you share about your exhaust? Did you start your high flow before the Y pipe or after? Also, what size pipe did you go with? I'm looking to do the same - appreciate any other observations.

Sure, glad to help. I found an exhaust guy who owns a Paj 3.5 and he had done a few systems on his own car to find what he thought was the best result.

Strangely enough he swore that 2 1/2" was too big for a Paj unless you wanted to run at 6000 RPM all day, and that 2 1/4" gave much more usable power and torque for everyday use. We started directly behind the Y piece with a 2 1/4" cat converter then a free flow Lukey muffler roughly where the standard can sits, and finished it off with a small resonator beside the fuel tank. Sounds great with a lovely Paj burble, but doesn't get too loud for everyday driving.

I am very impressed with the result, :D much more responsive, more mid range power, and best of all as I said in the earlier post a lot more torque down low (below 2000 rpm), which helps to keep the 285's turning.

BTW, im thinkin of takin it 2 Glenmount Automotive in Mount Waverly, supposed 2 b Pajero experts. Anyone heard of them, or recommend anyone else???

Thanks PajMan - 2.25" it will be. And Tonka Paj that ride rocks! Had Mitsu brought the Gen2 SWB including the JTop to the US I would guess the offroad aftermarket industry here might be completely different for us Mitsu owners. More pics with the top off please! :D

Yeah I know Glenmount Automotive, Dave Yardley is in the Paj Club and drives a Rangie.
There is another place Elite Motors in Dandy the guy John who runs it worked at Mitsu for over 10 years (knows his stuff).
