Centre bearing for buggy

Post by CanberraMav »

Hi guys

What are people using for driveshaft centre bearings? I need something strong and preferably easy to obtain in Australia.

It also needs to be compact as im limited for space.

The buggy has 42's and a big v8. It will be used in high speed and crawling.

Anyone have photos or info?

Thanks

Just go to any bearing shop & use a SKF Pillow Block Bearing. Widely commonly used as a support bearing for 2 piece front driveshaft assemblies.

Ive seen those. Did you use the cast housing type or the stainless?

Most just use cast housing although in the hi end KOH Buggies I have seen custom billet blocks made.
But in saying that I have never heard a failure due to cast pillow blocks

My moon buggy split a cast pillow block.
I wouldn't and haven't used them since.

Hendrix motorsports make a billet pillow block that suits a standard hilux 2 piece rear front shaft, no modification needed, I used one in my old buggy worked a treat, rubber mounted too.

Nice work Johnsy, that's a pretty good value solution

For what it's worth i'm using one from Wide open design.

Same idea but i'm guessing johnsy's was a lot cheaper

Yeah they are the ones I was talking about Milo.
In my view to break a PB my first thoughts as to why wouldn't be weakness of bearing but more towards setup. You can buy cheap PB's too which is why I said SKF & they come in different ratings to suit their application. 1 PB isn't the same as the next which I guess not everyone would know unless you are in the industry.

ahh yes. don't worry i had a bit of a moment as well. But there's more than that to think about. Consider your time.....

Firstly while i'm mechanically minded and pretty good at imagining how i'd go about building something like what johnsy made up, i'd have to spend at least a few hours on the phone and internet working out what parts to use, how do do it so it had some kind of lifespan etc. Then i'd have to spend some time actually sourcing up those parts.

Then i'd actually have to go and make it. So let's say mine cost me near as dammit to 600'ish landed.

I'm an engineer and i'd conservatively put my personal hourly work rate at $35/hr or better. Frankly i could easily spend 12+ hours in something like that by the time i got all the parts together, figured out how to do it, then actually built it. That's $420 bucks right there. Now add in parts costs themselves, even if you use junker diff bits you'll still have to get new bearings and a second flange and maybe pay to have someone broach some splines for you.Say another $50 bucks.

So for $470 bucks it's done, and you saved $130 bucks compared to me. Meanwhile i ordered and paid for the parts and then collected from my mailbox. 1/2 hour tops. The rest of the time i fucked my wife, patted the dog, went for a nice walk and drank some beer.

You only have so much time on this planet, it's only money.

I reckon I have an hour invested in that centre bearing. as said before the f250 rubber centre bearing is a good option at around $100-$120 off eBay, criddy from dragtec runs one in his buggy. There are so many options that all seam to work.

I have researched the options so i guess im just interested in what people have done and their experiences with it.

I have limited space to work with. Its about 120mm x 120mm. The base plate can be bigger, thats no problem.

Im leaning towards a pillow block turned upside down (for strength purposes) Is it worth going the stainless over cast?
