Post by USERNAME »

Hi , my 2.8 GU 2.8 Patrol made some weird banging noises under the bonnet , on inspection I found metal in the oil filter , I do not want to rebuild again so I could use some advice on what motor would be a economical replacement , petrol or diesel does not matter , if anyone has done a replacement with a Skyline or v8 please give me some info
Thanks

Which motor ? What do you want it for ? When you say economical do you mean to run or convert.
Cheapest conversion will be swapping in another nissan patrol engine.
I have run rb30 not a bad engine but underpowered for a patrol, can be turboed reasonable cheaply. Good offroad torque could be tricky to obtain. gearboxs are not the strongest could cause trouble if you are not careful.
I pulled out the rb30 and fitted a Tb48 engine fairly easy coversion other than wiring. 200hp easily great torque lots of power upgrade if you choose. Drink fuel like its going out of fashion. 18litres-24 litres per 100km.
Fuel cost too much so I bought a TD42 gq ute for work. Nice power more than the rb30 and lot cheaper to run 10-14litres per hundered km plenty of options for power up.
Rb series engines will bolt up to your gearbox would make for a very good hoon machine not sure how good the engines would be for 4wd work.
Chevy V8 would be very nice could get exspensive to fit and run.
Good luck
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.
