Custom Airbox

Post by Zookified »

Hey all,

I am going to knock up a custom airbox for my ute. Going custom because of space issues. It will be a box to fit the space I have, with a 4inch inlet and outlet and a pod filter inside. I will just use a perspex lid. It will be fed by a stainless snorkel with no snorkel head and the operning facing rewards.

The only thing I need some clarification on is with water drainage. Alot of guys seem to be running stainless snorkels with no head on them. They must suck in a fair bit of water in heavy rain. Where does this water then go? Straight into the engine or pool up in the airbox? From what can remember some airboxes have rubbers in the bottom which let the water out.

Could I just get some of these grommets from a factory airbox and fit them to mine when I make it?

Cheers fellas for any help

a stainless snorkel will let no more water in than a forward facing ram head.
air boxes will have a small drain hole for the water to trickle out of.
have a look at a few factory boxes and see what you can adapt. should have something so when its running itll suck closed then turn car off itll drain out

Thanks for the reply mate.

I ended up getting a water catch tank off a petrol hiux. It might have been a 22r engine? The factory airbox has a small circular box on the bottom to catch water. It has a rubber grommet that when the car is running and sucking air is sealed shut. So when the engine is turned off the suction stops and the water can drain out. I had a shop knock up a 1.6mm box for me, which i welded in a section containing the rubber grommet I cut out of the factory aibox. I just used a pod filter with a clear perspex lid for easy inspection.
