Gu tb45 fuel pump issues.

Post by msjc38 »

I'm a mechanic & this one has got me. Three years ago I moved to darwin from vic. Before I drove to darwin in jan 2011 I went on my last 4x4 session in the hills, cos there's non in darwin. I got as far as 100 km south of coober pedy & my car stopped. It was low 40s outside. I got bak to my car with the tow truck driver & it started. I drove back to town to a workshop to find a broken tree branch squashing a breather line. So I removed it & never had the drama since. Last Sunday ,3 years later we where heading down the Stuart highway to get 50 km north of three ways & it stopped again. Got a tow truck back there to find it started again. We got to tenant creek I couldn't get a pump to we went to Alice springs & no pump there either. We kept going to Glenndambo with no dramas. Then 60 km from burra sa she stopped again. So I took the fuel caps off waited 15 mins & away we went. Now I'm thinking fuel vaporising. But in 15 years of mechanicing & working in the territory I've never seen it in an efi vehicle. We got to mildura it did it 4 times with in 5 km. the first time I put my ear to the fuel filler & I could hear fuel gurgling. It had me wondering obout fuel vaporising. Then it kept doing it. It's defenintly temp related.
Every time it's done it there has been 1/2 a tank or more its done it with 3/4s as well I'm thinking the pump it self doesn't like the intense heat so I'm going to put a new one in it tomorrow
If anyone has experienced this please let me know

Thanks

Possible faulty fuel pump relay??

Have you had the fuel pump out yet and inspected for burnt wires or possibly something blocking the pick up.

Have you ever replaced the fuel pump in the time you have owned the car?
Genuine nissan pumps are not great. I had a similar issue. Car would die, get it towed home and it would start and run fine.
I replaced the pump after the second tow after narrowing it down to that. Best thing i have ever done. See my gu had duel fuel before i got it and the previous owner must have never swapped it between the two. So my fuel pump was bad since day one for me. I decided to swap the genuine pump for a walbro intank pump. Its a little louder now outside the car, not noticeable inside.

what was the out come ?????

As I have a 98 gu tb45e auto and not so long ago the engine light would come on occasionally, I checked all the basics couldn't find anything wrong with the car it drove fine until I switched it from lpg to petrol, on lpg does everything as normal on petrol it sometimes goes some times doesn't so I thought easy that would be the fuel pump on its way out for sure.

So I avoided petrol until I got around replacing the pump.

However last night driving home I ran out of lpg flicked it to petrol and it ran fine no flashing engine light i was closer to home than the servo so i drove home no problem, then this morning I got in it to start it and it wont start with engine light flashing.

It'll fire every now and then but wont hold it running so yes i thought fuel pump gone, so after some mucking around i brought a 300lph DW performance universal pump, I fitted it but I still have the same issue fires occasionally but wont run now that the carpet is up i can hear the pump priming when the key is turned. but no running and as I have no lpg in it i cant drive it to get it scanned ? any ideas before the wallet falls over i have a scan tool but only has a a ob11 fitting.
and as its the missus car of cause now its a major drama !!!!

i ve been narrowing it down heaps of pressure at the rail, rules out filter but i have no injector pulse.

so need to work out how to over ride LPG / petrol switch to see if its the gas set up, ecu or could be faulty air flow meter ?

waiting for tow truck to take it to a servo to fill it with lpg then go from there.

I replaced the fuel pump & never had an issue again. it had a fuel pump just before I got the car. Turns there's a change over period in late 98 when Nissan changed fuel pumps. There was about 5 mm difference between the length of the pumps. Mine had the later pump in an early car. The strainer was sitting to high in the lank. I think causing the pump to over heat.
