Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.

Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.
At first I thought it was my imagination. I have done about 4000km over the last 10 days or so, towing trailers, moving house. Anyhow, my diesel seems down on power, struggling, and has developed a miss when under moderate acceleration. Motor has 330000km on the clock, and in the time I have had it, since about 150000km, it has not had the injectors or pump serviced. Could this be a cause of this condition. Happy to get them serviced, now that my move is done.

Bundy,
If its not too drastic a miss and loss of power throw some 2stroke in the fuel ( 200 :1 ) - 100 litres of fuel = 500 ml of 2 stroke and give it a run, may take a tank or two BUT a friend did it to his patrol and the miss/ loss of power just went away and it returned to normal after about 5-600kms.
Also want to see if it was a coincidence or there is some benefit in it. I have noticed that 2 stroke seems to clean or keep clean injectors / chambers as well as lubricate the IP
That is unless you are already using it in your fuel .
Could also be a cheap solution to your problem

Re: Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.
start with basics first before shelling out clams on injectors etc
is the air filter clean/new?
is the fuel filter clean/new?
is there air getting into the fuel system? check this with a peice of clear PVC hose between fuel filter and fuel injection pump and poke it out through the bonnet like so

a new air fiter, new fuel filter are cheap to change, may be the cause, and if not, its good early maintenance.
also check in tank screens on the pick up

Re: Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.
you can also do as christoffa suggests, but with 500ml of ULP, Or use a can of injetor cleaner.
but I'm tipping air or fuel filter obstruction, or air in the fuel system

Re: Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.
What about a split intercooler? Its already been replaced once, because it had split at one tank end, where the core meets the "tank". Just pulled and cleaned the MAF, and running it, I could feel pressure from around the intercooler. Pulled it, to find splits around both ends of the cores. Looks like the exchange intercooler is one that's just glued up to seal a previous crack, and painted silver. Not impressed at all. Exchange unit bought through a well known Nissan parts supplier in Rocky, who also has a sister shop that sells Toyota parts. Exchange unit is branded TCR. To answer the other questions, air cleaner clean- actually a K&N which happened to be replaced 7000km ago, at last service. Looks like I am up for a replacement intercooler. Now, I can understand how this would lead to loss of power, but could it also lead to the miss under moderate to hard acceleration?

Re: Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.
K&N filter is OK if you hate your engine! but sounds like its a Nissan, so carry on
Is the MAF before the intercooler? If so I would expect a boost leak would be screwing up fuel mixtures as the MAF is reading one thing, the engine is seeing another.

Re: Loss of power, and missing, diesel engine.
Yes, MAF is just after the air cleaner. Seems like the issue may have been the cracked intercooler. I did a bodgy with some 2 part epoxy plastic weld last night, right around both ends of where the core meets the tanks, and this morning, all seems well. BUT, I haven't tried it really hard, but in high gear, from low revs, and accelerator pushed flat to the floor, no hesitation. The vehicle has had a K&N in it for the last 200000 km, that I know of, probably longer. No issues. And you guessed correct. Nissan Patrol 2005 3.0 litre.
