Free wheeling hub swap for GU patrol

Post by Overit »

Hi all,

I am wanting to change my auto hubs over to manual hubs but have heard GQ hubs won't engage properly on the GU? I am looking at getting a set of these: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/231336810102" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Will they be a straight swap or are mods needed for them to engage correctly? I am about to put the locker in the front, brace the diff, do the swivel hubs seals and slotted brake rotors at the same time so I want to do this swap at the same time so I only need to do it once (until they break that is...). I know the AVMs work but I hate the small screws they use so I want to steer clear of them. I know many have done these conversions, is it a straight swap or do I need to mod anything? I know the spline count is the same (31).

Just want to be sure before I pull the whole thing apart. It's my daily so I need to do the whole thing over a weekend from start to finish so I can drive it to work on the Monday.

Please help!

Cant comment on those other than buy cheap buy twice is a moniker Id stand by. They do seem cheap. And shiney, if thats of any use. ;)

On my old GU I used the red AVM's when the standard auto lockers crapped out.
On 35's with front ARB locker I had zero issues with them.

The new GU (also on 35's) i picked up recently has AVM's as well, the initial few uses have had no issues.

I am aware that older AVM's a few years back (earlier design/models?) did break, but as I said my recent experiences have all been good.
My friends aren't holding me back..... I'm pulling 'em forward.

Cool! Thanks for the info! Yeah they do look cheap, I ended up ordering a set... Will see how they go... The seller said they are a direct swap/conversion so I'll soon find out if they are... For the price and warranty it should be good if they work. They look exactly the same as factory GQ hubs both externally and internally so hopefully they are the goods, ha ha! I would rather break the Hub than a CV or diff so I don't mind if they are a little weaker, just not too weak, you know what I mean... If they are that crap, I'll pick up a set off a wrecked GQ. The bloke said the ones I have bought are exactly what Nissan used as genuine.? Don't know how true that is, but the price is right to try them out.

I know what you mean about buying cheap and buying twice. Sometimes though they are the same products made in the same factory and just rebadged, but who knows if these are?

The AVMs I'm talking about have the tiny little screws on the face of the hub, they seized up on a mates truck and he snapped two off trying to get them out to service the swivel hubs, the only way to get them off then was to use a punch and a BFH to punch them through. I don't know if they are the old type or new type though? You would know, have yours got those tiny screws I'm talking about?

Cheers

I've done a similar replacement. It worked for another 5 years, then I had to replace it again. After 8 years, has it made any difference to you?
